In reality, most of these people have no real experience with diversity. Working in an auto factory with people from many different backgrounds is diversity. Going to an Asian Fusion restaurant with your white friends is not.
Every day you can pick up the NY Times and read a story about New Yorkers doing something expensive and ridiculous, but congratulating themselves for it. Check this one out:

Its just annoying when the people who live their automatically think they are somehow more culturally advanced and sneer at all the Midwestern people, as if we are all gun-toting hicks.
I agree with this guy. The attitude people takes towards the tens of millions of people in the midwest is arrogant and obnoxious.
I have found that the major metropolitan areas of the US, like NY, LA, Chicago, DC, and others function like islands. The folks that live there have little idea about the day-to-day life in other parts of the country. Those places also can be so hard to escape from the grasp of the metropolitan area.
People everywhere are doing interesting things, finding ways to make a living, creating art, etc. The difference is that they do it without the fanfare of pop culture or a major news outlet. The people that live in places society chooses to ignore often know what comprises a good life, because all they have is each other when nobody else is paying attention.
Do you really believe that the major cities do not hold tremendous cultural advantages?
