Indy Wants 40,000 People at Inagural Marathon

This is so laughable it hurts:

"Spectators numbering over 100,000 are expected to line the 26.2-mile course..."

And they plan on starting the 5k at the same time as the Half marathon? Looking forward to seeing how that works out....

IndyGuy - I just called Indy Classic Marathon inquiring about the start times. And was told by the lady who answered that the starts are different for the full,half and 5k. The more you guys give the Indy Classic free publicity the more people are going to visit there site and possibilty register for The Indy Classic. My friend works at a business that's helping to sponsor their event. She says that their race has registered more people than the Lawrence in all of Lawrence years of operation and this is Indy's first year. No wonder with all the exposure you guys are giving them. If this keeps up Lawrence might as well close down their race. But I guess that's what many people want.

Your right on the money Steve. Plus who can resist running downtown Indianapolis. There shutting down streets that has never been shut down before.

Also, I looked on the website and didn't see any reference to the race being a Boston qualifier. I sent an e-mail about this issue to the address listed for contact information, and haven't heard anything back.

As an Indiana native with family in Indy, I briefly considered this race for my fall marathon. Then I looked at the website. Yikes. Now, I'm headed to Columbus or Detroit.

Yes, I did notice that. This seems to be some sort of marketing tactic. The person will come on here and make three posts in a row all supporting ICM. It is definitely suspect.

and that Mike Wickiser is certifying the course. I checked the USATF website and Wickiser is the official IN certifier. Of course this isn't saying much, as it is pretty easy to list this stuff on their site without it being true. Also, I don't understand how it can be a BQ without it being certified yet...hmmm.

Good call. I also emailed them with some basic questions just to see how well they respond but have yet to receive a reply after about a week since sending it.

It's being panned ( justifiably ) as it is a big rectangle, with virtually all of it along major streets that will still have traffic going in both directions, with probably only 1 lane coned off for the runners, after the first few miles. Meridian Street north , 86 th St. west, Michigan Rd. south, Kessler Blvd. east, then Meridian St. again south.

I ran the Mini but will not run the Indy Classic this year. Although I dont think the route is bad at all. It's actually a pretty smart idea to take this new race thru downtown Indianapolis pass all the major T.V. stations. (Free Publicity Again) And all the curious people who will be in the streets just watching this event on the weekend of the Colts Opening Game. And dont think this was not planned as such a news week.

I think it is interesting that there was no mention of it in the Indy Mini marathon packet. I don't even think there was a booth there. Is there no real money to promote? I don't know of any who have signed up for it yet. I wouldn't mind running it as a training run to prepare for a real marathon later in the fall, but to put my eggs in a September basket in Indiana??? The mean temp is 69, but the ave min is 58 and the ave max is 80 degrees. The record low is 38 and record high 97. More than likely not fast conditions. I don't think I will throw down $90.00 for an inaugeral event hosted by individuals who can't get their mile markers right on 5K's and 4 milers. I like Indy's fall marathon and hope it stays that way.

I spoke with a person in the News Media about their event asking why they were not at the Mini Expo. I was told by the newspaperson that the Mini returned their registration and check to them because they alledged their expo was full. I'm being told they have registerd close to Ten Thousand people already. I do infact believe this because Indianapolis tend to run toward new events. A gentleman who is very well known in the race community said to me that once the new marathon happens the Lawrence Marathon might as well packup and go home. He said they have been holding on by a thin piece of thread anyway. I noticed on Indy Classic's website the company who is doing their course is Mike Wickiser USATF I was told he is the one person to go to if you want a credible course. They are the best in the business certainly around this area I was told. The newsperson also knew of the course person and concurred in part with me. If the new marathon people pull this years race off we will be looking at another major event in Downtown Indianapolis for years to come.

Enough of this you guys. Everyone knows you have a connection to one of the running events around the area. You guys got to be the biggest dumbaxxes in town. Your squabbling back and forth is going to destroy one of the biggest events that has come to Indianapolis in years. The two of you idiots ought to sit down and talk and combine your efforts and help put Indy on the map for marathons. (Everyone gains). The townspeople,merchants,business,The City, Everyone benefits. It takes a big person to call the other and simply say let's put a stop to this squabbling. And see what you guys can do for this town as far as tourist and job. STOP BEING SELFISH FOOLS. If people who come to this site read this thread and conclude that it's a worthwhile risk to enter this race then they're (not there or their) as idiotic and as lacking at drawing intelligent conclusions as you are.

Why must you be insulting? Why should we be convinced by your statements? Which Marathon is in the Governor's INShape Program? Who has been given permission to have this race by the city of Indianapolis. And do really believe these people will not draw huge crowds of runners and spectators. Being in the heart of Indianapolis. It's time for you to take a reality check. I'm not endorsing any race but it's time to be pratical in your thinking. Your making yourself sick with hatred and resentment. Seek professional help or better yet ask for prayer.

Would you please take yourself and all your other fake IDs and get lost? Why the heck would the "news media" know that the ICM sent a check and had it returned, know how many are registered, etc? Some random "newsperson" knows Mike Wickiser and agrees that he's the best ever? You're making this crap up to pump up this new marathon, and slamming the existing one at the same time. I've run the half out in Lawrence many times and it's a professional, well done race. It's not going anywhere. If there's really 10,000 people signed up for YOUR race, why don't you issue a press release and have the Star print it? Hmm?

Good luck. There's no reason Indy can't get 40k. The state of Indiana has umpteen millions of people to draw from.
