The exposure will be huge along with the crowds. The fact that it is in NY gives it much more credibility across the whole country.
NY Sub Elite: You have a great city. That much is certain. There is so much energy and vitality in New York, and I love it there.
However, the US Olympic Marathon Trials is more about our open, transparent and democratic system of picking the best Olympic Team possible on the right COURSE, on the right DATE, and doing it in a manner that includes all the right people. The date of the Olympic Trials, about 2 months after the World Championships, fails to meet this basic requirement.
The 5km/10km/marathon runners from Osaka are going to be hard-pressed to
I have another issue about the course itself. Let me first say that Central Park is one of my very favorite places to run in the world. It's a beautiful and wonderful place. However, the course in Beijing is going to be very flat. I think that having the Trials around the outside PERIMETER of Central Park is a better solution, and of course the date should change to March or April, about same time as the Women's race.
Another problem of the date is that it greatly narrows the window of opportunity for those ambitious runners who are just trying to qualify for the Trials. Chicago 07, Cal International 07, Austin 08, Houston 08 and Phoenix 08 are out of the picture for qualifying opportunities. The Olympic Trials is about these runners as well.
The issue is not about spectators, money or TV coverage. I suspect that the Mebs, Culpeppers, Abdis and Ryan Halls of the USA would run the Trials marathon full tilt without any prize money, without even one spectator and without any media coverage. The main issues are the date of the race and the course, mainly the date.
