hey for you guys information at the NFL combines the 40 yard dash is laser timed, and run in cleats on grass, in the olympics guys get to run in spikes and on a track that actually boosts them forward!!the times in the NFL are the most legit times out there, Deion Sanders ran a 4.17 with hand held true, but about 10 years later he ran a 4.3 laser and he tripped! imagine if he wud have run on a track in spikes!!his time wud have been around a 3.9 THATS DISGUSTING!!!!!!

First off, the NFL combine is not hand timed!!!! Many of the pro days are, so it's possible that Michael Vick's 4.2 was hand timed since it wasn't run at the RCA dome in Indianapolis. Also, it's possible it was run on a track. Reggie Bush ran his on a track last year at USC I think. Unless I see a time from the actual NFL combine, I don't believe it.

Advantages of NFL combine:

1)you don't have to start on a gun. You cross a laser and the time starts. You get a little room to get your speed up (less than a yard I think), but it's definitely not a fly zone.

Disadvantages:

1)They run in cleats on turf, not grass like some have suggested.

Still, Ben Johnson/MO et al would smoke this guys. With the advantages, I'd say they'd run at least 3.8 or 3.9.

They use a machine. The timer starts as soon as the runner passes it and ends as he crosses the 40 yd mark. This is more accurate. But thats the NFL!!! IN the olympics ,however, the timer starts as soon as the gun goes off! NOW LISTEN TO THIS!!! 100% OF THE TIME THE OLYMPIAN IS NOT GOIN TO START RUNNING AT THE EXACT MOMENT THE GUN GOES OFF, UNLESS HE ANTICIPATES THE THE GUN PERFECTLY!!! Meaning that the olympian actually ran faster than the timer suggest. SO in their case u actually subtract time!!! Overall, The fastest track runner is faster than the fastest NFL player. This is coming from a guy who loves football and guessed on the track question before this!!!

Yeah dude, the football 40 yd dash doesn't include reaction time. The clock starts when the guy starts. In track, the clock starts when the gun goes off. BIG difference - probably anywhere from +.24 (the hand-time conversion for T&F) and .5 (simply because people don't know how to time).

So make all those 4.3 40 yd dashes and make them 4.7.

Actually you get DQ'd if you "anticipate the gun perfectly." You have to have a reaction time of > .10 seconds, or else it is deemed a "false start."

And the NFL combine does use electronic timing (so add about .2) and college is usually hand-timed (so add another .2-.3).

the fastest person in the state of GA. for highschool track is also a receiver for our school's football team. his 10th grade year, he ran a 10.7 in the 100m. a year later he came back to record a 10.4. Now, Nike has yearly combines that highschool athletes attend. at the sparq combine he ran a 4.26 in the 40. keep in mind that Nike electronically times the 40 event. Reaction times may not be it, i think the boy is just fast

line up all the hyped-up NFL'ers with these supposedly incredible 40 yard times against the likes of Powell, Gay, Atkins, etc. for a race (let them decide the distance) and see who comes out on top.

the nfl has better athletes than track and field. no they wouldnt win a sprint race vs top sprinters, but thats cause its so technical. put football pads on top sprinters and it would be a more fair race

To make sure you don't think I'm biased towards either sport, I played 3 years of varsity football in High school and 4 years in varsity track. I love football and it was my passion but I was just a better sprinter so I ran track in College. Now to business;

Ben Johnson in the 1988 seul olympic final ran 9.79 in the 100. Most track experts and athletes believe that it was the fastest start in history. He covered the first 60 meters in 6.38 seconds - 1 100th of second faster than Mo Greene's 60M world record.

However for argument sake lets take Mo Greene's world record. He got to 30 meters in 3.75 seconds andto 40 meters in 6.64 seconds putting his 40 yard time(36.576 Meters at right around 4.34 seconds. He reacted to the gun in .13 seconds which means that he covered 40 yeards in 4.21 seconds. Second place was a full 10th of a second behind, around 4.3 for the 40. Since this happened at the indoor world championships where the Fastest men in the world were running it gives us an idea of how special and uniquely fast this time was. All this was timed electronically, the start as well as the finish and every 10 meters in between.

The point of all this is to show that when someone says that Mike vick or Deion Sanders or any other NFL player ran under 4.3 seconds its not true. A perfect example is Reggie bush who at pro day was supposedly timed at 4.32 seconds. I find it quite interesting to see that a Man who has never run the 100 meters under 10.3 seconds can run the 40 as fast as other men who have run the 100 meter in under 9.9 seconds. It just doesn't happen.

As long as the NFL keeps using hand times and not fully automatic electric timing (including the start) We're always going to have guys claim they ran 4.3 or 4.2 that are in reality running in the 4.4's or higher.

THANK YOU Trackicon! Maurice Greene ran in the low 4.2's when he broke the 60m world record, as determined exactly how you explained. Justin Gatlin has been timed at a combine running 4.42 and 4.45. This is not that far off, considering he had no blocks and wasn't on a track surface. The blocks will lower your 10m time by .1-.3 seconds depending on the athlete (not to mention the differences in surface)! So Mo Greene's no-block 40 time ON A TRACK would be in the low 4.3's - probably high 4.3/low 4.4 on turf! This is reality folks. Now, are there people that are faster than mo greene to 40? I would say definitely... but these same people probably top out at their max speeds well before Mo Greene has finished accelerating to his, so could not match his 100m performance. If you train exclusively for the 40, you will not necessarily improve your 100m time by any more than the improvement in your 40 time. 100m is more top speed dependent, which requires a totally different type of training!

Are you people ignorant ? Ok , first off I am a NCAA QB/WR with some of the same style as Michael Vick and I have been involved with the Combine before . The combine is times with the same setup as your local fast food joint or stoplights (at least here in Colorado , the timer starts just as weight is applied past the start line and past the finish and it has about a five foot margin for those of stride wider than normal ! Do you people really think a multi-billion dollar operation like the NFL times by hand ?

All this track vs NFL talk is ridiculous ! The 40m is a acceleration drill mostly based on WR , CB , and Safety positions because of the routes they have to run which are usually no longer than 40m unless it is a very deep pass which means the faster you run the 40m the better chance you will have a step on your CB in turn leading to what Randy Moss does , or in the CB case have a step on your WR in the case of Champ Bailey.

True: 1.Deion Sanders has the fastest timed 40m which is logical considering he has burned some of the NFL's fastest.

2.Jeremy Bloom has been said to run a 4.15 in the Olmypics training center in Colorado Springs (I was a Colorado Buff an know him personally (he was a Olympic Gold Medalist Skier and a Player for the Eagles and Steelers)

Any times before the introductions of the Verifi System in 1995 would be historically inaccurate because of the hand timing (any you also can argue atheletes today are much stronger because of technology in health , clothing , and child development)(Please consider the enviroment and what track runners wear vs combine , which only allows Reebok Dazzle and Skinny Shirt and Reebok training shoes!).

AND YES MIKE VICK DID RUN A 4.2 40M and that is one of the reason the coaches in Atlanta let him run the ball.
