The Internal Revenue Service deliberately targeted groups with "tea party" in their names and who were applying for federal tax exempt status, delaying processing of their applications and requesting unnecessary information, according to an advance copy of a report by the agency's inspector general obtained Tuesday by CNN.
The report found that for more than 18 months beginning in early 2010 the IRS developed and put in place a policy that used "inappropriate criteria" to identify potential political applications and then forwarded those applications to a team of specialists for review.
"The IRS used inappropriate criteria that identified for review Tea Party and other organizations applying for tax-exempt status based upon their names or policy positions instead of indications of potential political campaign intervention," according to the report, obtained from a congressional source
As a result, substantial delays occurred in processing certain applications, and unnecessary information was requested, according to the report.
"Although the processing of some applications with potential significant political campaign intervention was started soon after receipt, no work was completed on the majority of these applications for 13 months," the report said.
Of the 296 applications that were targeted for review as of December 17, 2012, 108 had been approved, 28 were withdrawn by the applicant and none had been denied.
Of those applications still open for review, 160 cases were open from 206 days to more than three years.

The Obamaphone thing is just a smear. As you know, it is a program dating back to 1984.
as i noted earlier, yes, the overall program was started under reagan but it was for landlines with the idea that not being able to make any phone calls makes things like getting a job or talking to a doctor very difficult. it did not involve 4g phones used exclusively for sexting, surfing the internet, posting to facebook, tweeting and emailing. handing out free cellphones is 100% obama and completely unnecessary for job searches and calling doctors (in addition to being a lot more expensive than landlines).

Where do you get your news? It isn't just limited to Cincinnati - the Washington DC office is also involved.

2. The expense for these phones is not borne by the government.
3. The phone programs do not include free texting or free Internet access.

Really? I just looked at their site. One of the articles is entitled IRS Target: Scrutiny Directed From on High - might want to check it out. However, somehow I think that you must have a different source.

They had on an "expert" on and he's the one who said that it was limited to Cincinatti. No one challenged him, so I took it as gospel. But I've done some checking since you posted and now see that you are right. Thanks for the correction.

(1) yes, the very first cellphones were given out in late 2008 but it has been under obama that there has been an explosion of the free cellphones. are you going to argue that bush handed out anywhere near as many cellphones as obama? the number of users has gone from 7.1 million to 12.5 million under obama and the costs have more than doubled.
(2) yes but so what? it's borne by the taxpayers in the form of a tax on your phone bill! obama then has the nerve to claim that technically it is not a tax but i have asked my phone company to remove it and have been told that it is mandatory.

there were 7.1 million people in the program in 2008 but many (most) started pre 2008. there now are 12.5 million in the program so your math is correct that obama has added 5.4 million people (and more than doubled its cost). you are correct that more people are eligible who have not hit the government up for a free phone, which, btw, also permit international calling.

Okay, those numbers make sense to me now. Thanks again. As for international calling, that makes sense since illegal immigrants can get these phones. :-)

Americans will now be forced to provide all their health insurance information to the IRS. The fact that the incredibly powerful IRS is going to be in charge of enforcing Obamacare is scary.
