Carter would have been the worst president ever if Obama hadn't taken over that spot. Despite the fact that everyone thinks that Carter was/is such a great humanitarian think about the pressure he put on many other countries to go along with the boycott. He basically told many poor countries to boycott or else. Or else what? Very simply, we would cut off aid to them and millions of people would die. let's not forget that some 26 african countries missed '76, 62 countries (inclu w germany and japan) boycotted '80, and 14 countries stayed away from LA in '84; btw, lichtenstein, netherlands, spain & sweden boycotted melbourne in '56 to protest hungary invasion while egypt, lebanon & iraq boycotted due to suez canal, and china didn't come because taiwan was included (ironically china came back in '84 after 32 years), and cuba & ethiopia boycotted '88 in support of north korea -- so if carter was the bad guy, he certainly had a lot of company ...

I guess the USA should not have been allowed into the 60s/70s games because of Vietnam. My point is that there would be no international sport if politics are entered as a reason for going or not going. No country is politically perfect. Remember, Carter let the Russians come to our winter games (we spanked the hockey team) but then punished our athletes. Other than that, he only tried a wek wheat embargo. Some think he did this to cover up the iranian hostage fiasco.

The Olympics has always been a time where the world has put down their swords and competed against eachother. What Carter did not only insulted the Olympic's integrity but also ruined the chance of a life time for hundreds of American athletes.

What did not sending our athletes over there accompish? Did we save American lives, by not participating? No. Symbolic gesture my ass. Don't use American athletes as your scapegoat. Let them compete against the best in the world and represent the U.S.
