There are a number of factors that can keep a 4:15 type from "developing" into a 3:47 guy. Quality of HS training and injuries just being two. Often, the blame isn't on the coach. For once, maybe some of the responsibility for development falls on the athlete. Attitude, perhaps?

I am well aware of those factors. However, a good coach sets a program atmosphere that guides student-athletes away from those negative attributes and immerses them in a positive environment that will allow them to improve. The coach sets the guidelines for which the team will follow if they want to be great. It is pretty simple. If they don't want to buy in to what the rest of the team is doing they are no longer welcome as a part of the team. Athletes with bad attitudes don't stay in good systems because the coaches do not allow it. Those who commit themselves to training hard and being a part of something special will improve and develop in a good program, and 5 seconds of improvement in the mile over 4 or 5 years is not good development.

Developing athletes basically amounts to moral victories when it comes to alumni, athletic directors, and other people who ultimately make decisions.

Go to a college and see if they have trophies and huge blown up pictures for the All-Developed Team, or for All Americans?

Of course developing athletes is important, but first and foremost is recruiting the more talented athlete out of the gates.

Hey, don't get me wrong: I know recruiting is essential to the job and the success of a program. However... if you go looking for a hot name who can recruit, that's who you'll get. It makes sense to me to look for a hot coach who can recruit. Just my observation.

Seeing that this thread has been hijacked by all of us, I started a new one so that this one can get back to what it was originally about - coaching openings. Please consider posting all your comments about general recruiting/coaching thoughts there and keep this thread only about the specific schools with openings or possible openings.

It's been quite lately. Any new information on openings?

See Barton College, Wilson, NC hired Karen Goodlock, ex-UNC runner and Winston Salem asst. to start up their m/w track programs.

Back to the college openings, EIU will not hire any Coaches until the end of the year due to a hiring freeze.

Any truth to the rumer the former Mimai Women's coach, Rita, is trying to get the OSU women's cc job now that she is married to the men's cc coach?

No truth to that rumor at all. They travel together only in the fall, but there is a totally seperate women's cross country coach.

I think the OSU women's coach has some SERIOUS job security after winning All Ohio and making it to NCAAs (granted they STILL got 8th at Big 10).

Fast fact: There is NO job security in coaching. Wait until a new A.D. comes in and wants to hire his buddy. Wait until Karen's contract ends, then it won't matter what Chris did with the XC program because the new director of the program will hire who he wants.

Rita has said publically that she is in no hurry to get back into coaching and certainly not at OSU.

If she decides to get back into coaching she could land a job nearly anywhere with her resume and gender advantage and not have to deal with the public BS that she would certainly endure if Rob hired her at OSU.

Thats great she can coach anywhere, but doubtful she will want to leave Columbus where her new husband and new baby reside.

Did she leave her last husband to take the Miami job?

Acquaintance of mine was interviewed and told me he was a lock for the job if he wanted it.
