Nauman was an absolute non factor yesterday, hope he can recover and race nicely indoors. I doubt we see him in the fall outside of their home meet running unnattached.
This meet was very bad timing for the Cali kids coming 5 days after their state championship. Combe ran 5 races last weekend , Zavaleta 3 races, and Dailey one race.
I think all 3 would have performed better with more rest, especially Combe (although she PR'd and placed second). She may have had more in the last 200 with more rest.
Both in XC and Track the CA State meet is too late compared to everyone else if they are trying to do a National event. In XC it's the week before NXN. But CIF just has to do their own thing and the people in charge don't like change.
The reason why the XC state meet is so late is because the qualifying process is long. They have to go through the league, section prelims, and section finals to get to the state meet

It depends on what section you are in for CA. Most have one more step that you didn't list. It has different names in different sections. Yes the process is too long but they could start it earlier and eliminate some regular season meets. Or start the season earlier in general since we have no indoor season.
Hard to see them running faster on Sunday but maybe there was wind today?
what happened to Jay McDonald? I thought he would be a sub 4 threat.
They did keep saying there was wind on the finish straightaway
It was gusty. the wind was saying 7 mph, but the gusts were a bit stronger. they had to fight the wind going up the home stretch. also, shoutout to StL for packing that place. The StL running community is awesome!
A lot of the big names were past their state meet peaks at this point and finished far off their PRs. I remember being impressed by Pre back in the day running the HS 2 Mile record in April and then still running 13:52 and making a US senior team at 5K. Takes talent and planning to still run great in the summer weeks after State. I remember when Ritz's peak for world junior XC cut into his senior season and he graduated with his junior year PR at 2 Miles.

The crowd looked great and was very supportive of the runners.

Yeah. There is just no way that you could start that long process one or two weeks earlier. Just not possible. Couldn't be done.🙄
Mantecon and Leonard are running the 2 Mile at Brooks. Beroset, Hassan, Culpepper, Pifer, and Burns are running the Mile there. I would be surprised if the winner is under 3:59 high there.

Back in March everyone was on the Montecon bandwagon after his amazing quadruple in NYC. Now, nobody even mentions his HOKA race??
I am surprised Mantecon is even upright, with the amount of racing he does. I think he raced four times at Indoor Nats weekend. All, very fast efforts, not sure about Outdoors, but I would think he ran quite a bit.
His best 1600 at altitude that season was 4:10.55 (equivalent to 4:12 for the mile). An 8.2 second difference (altitude tables predict a . He ran 4:12.33 for 1600 at state that year. The conversion is about 6 seconds.
I mean postseason races with a bunch of fast guys and more even pacing are always going to be a recipe for a much quicker pace than, say, Rocco leading almost the entire Niwot Invitational 1600 to win in 4:09, or the state race, where I think they ran a 65 at some point.
Exactly, his marks at altitude would have been significantly faster in fields like these.

Additional time to train, taper and peak, wavelights, pacers, time trial setting, competitive field. Yes. You’d think it would be faster if the altitude adjustment held up for just the elevation change component of faster times

Not sure why so many people are altitude deniers. So all of those factors combined are worth 10 seconds, but altitude is worth none of it? That's quite a conclusion.

Long term, the CA runners likely would have been better off by passing on the HOKA races but likely hard to convince someone at that age to forgo the trip and opportunity to meet and compete with top high school talent.
