My best three mile PFT on Parris Island was 17:33. Later I ran a 16:36 when I was in the fleet and allowed to run more. The third fastest man in the entire Marines Corps in 1984 was just a few seconds short of eclipsing 14 minutes at the three mile distance, which means the other two were running under 14 minutes. It was not uncommon to hear of runners who could run under 16 minutes in boot camp.

I ran 16:54 for final PFT in boot camp and that was the second fastest in my series. Just before boot camp, I had run a 15:58 5K in a road race. That can give you an idea of the level of "training" I was getting in boot camp. My DIs didn't give a crap about how fast I was. They knew I was going to be well below 18:00 and they didn't seem to know or care about any record 3 mile time. All they cared about was that I work hard on the pull-ups, my weak point. I did catch a little hell for coming in second.

When I got to the fleet, I focused more on running and less on the upper body stuff (outside of what we did as a unit), while maintaining first class PFT. I wanted to go below 15:00, got close, but never quite there. I got into this discussion with several senior Marines through the years... What would they rather me be: a 15:00 runner with 10 pull-ups or an 18:00 runner with 20 pull-ups. None cared about me being fast. One put it best... "I'd rather have a work horse rather than a race horse."

Point being... In my experience, nobody in the Marines cared about how fast I ran or what the record 3 mile time was.

a week before boot camp i ran a 5k in 15:49... my last pt test of basic i ran 17:21..

Marine boot camp doesn't make u a better runner.

I used to run weekly group track workouts with Farley in the early 90's at TC Williams HS track (Alexandria, VA). He was one hell of a good runner. He either won a lot of road races or came in the top 3 in the DC area back in those days. He was on the level of a Darrell General or Jim Hage. Those 3 guys dominated the DC racing scene.

I notice poilcemen in the US are grossly out of shape, obese, don't pay attention while on duty, and can't even fight with their hands, nor do throws, and blocks.

When I took my Initial Strength Test (IST) back in August since I'm still in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP); I did 99 crunches in 2 minutes, 3 pull-ups, and a 1.5 mile run time of 8:58. My recruiter told me to just double my run time to get the 3 mile time and it comes out to 17:16, to get a perfect score you need to do the 3 miles in 16 minutes which would be less or close to 8 minutes for the IST run. It's not that hard to do, and that was my first time doing the IST. I only got a score of 207, which is 18 points away from being 1st class.

You have to run 18:00 for the 3 miles to get 100 points.

If you haven't experienced Marine Corps training then you have no place commenting on how it works and you clearly don't understand what truly makes a military efficient.

Allow me to correct your mistakes so you don't confuse or mislead anyone else. Recruits are not beaten senseless, maimed, assaulted, or forced to commit suicide at any point in training in any military branches of the U.S.

Drill Instructors are not permitted to strike recruits for training purposes or any other except cases of self defense which would be extremely rare.

The reason Marines are so effective in combat is not because of their equipment (which is pretty much Army hand me downs like the hueys that have been used since Vietnam) but because of the way they are trained to handle situations of extreme stress and high physical demand with minimal supplies and support. If you simply take some average citizen and teach them to shoot a rifle and use other military equipment until they are expert marksmen then send them into combat they will almost certainly get themselves and/or others killed. They will likely panic when someone starts firing at them rather than react tactically to neutralize the threat. The army has far better equipment and about 4 times the budget yet the Marine Corps is still considered our elite branch. I won't argue that having better weapons than an enemy can make a difference but only if they're in the hands of brave men and women who are not only physically but mentally prepared for war. Bootcamp isn't about getting beat and tortured it's about breaking down your pride and ego and showing you how much you can take and then building you up to withstand it and surpass what you thought your limits were. You learn to stay sharp and focused in stressful situations and practice fast paced problem solving You'll work with whatever you have because you never know what may happen. You learn to trust each other and work as a unit because your lives will depend on it. Marines come out of bootcamp with great respect for their drill instructors no matter how hard they've made life for 3 months because now they are stronger for it. If we were simply beaten and abused we would feel like we were escaping from cruel captors

not like we had accomplished something many don't have the will or mental strength to do. Any football coach can get you in good shape and sharpen your skills but being trained for war takes much more.

I believe you meant well with your comment but the truth is you are too ignorant on the subject and have no understanding of military training or operations to be throwing your opinion around like that. Do your research first next time please.

I ran a 17:40 on Final PFT at MCRD SD; 25 Pull-Ups, 91 Sit-Ups; my sub-18 was nothing compared 2 1981 Indiana State HS CC Champ Kenny Waterhouse's sub-15; he won the 1981 IHSAA XX Championship with a 14:47 5K; High-Speed, Ooh-rah🥇🇺🇸

For any of you non Marine's reading this thread what get seared into your brain permanently from boot camp isn't your 3 mile run time...it's having to use a urinal with two other dudes...

Ground forces become the new sheriff deputies. An Army or USMC general becomes territorial governor. Now you know why there will always be riflemen.

Now, I'm age 84 and earlier this year had trouble getting under 29 minutes for a flat 5K (though for some reason I could run around 58 minutes at 83 for a hilly masters championship 10K). Running gets harder in your eighties but more gratifying. I enjoy it more than ever since beginning at Parris Island some 67 years ago. Don't stop, though. It gets ever more difficult to get over injuries.
