Look, the "lady" who started this thread is a sad representational of most (American) women. They say money is not an issue but then what they buy, what they persuade (or force) their boyfriends/husbands to buy, and what they want are all based on materialistic values. This eventually turns women into bitches (and I hate to use that word).
Now, imagine this 400,000k per year sap shells out 50k (not even 25) for the ring for this XC running "lady." They get married. Let's turn the clock forward a mere 10 years when he's 44 and she's probably 35 and she's saddled with 2 kids and has the obligatory mini-van ass for spitting out kids and eating ho-ho's and staying at home and shopping. The guy will continue to have to work his ass off to support these 2 spoiled kids and a wife he spoiled from the onset of their marriage. And the wife won't give a thought to that 50k ring, even when the guy is begging his kness for forgiveness after he's had an affair with his secretary at work.
The ring will become old-hat and passe. Like Christmas gifts a mere few days after the "big day." After awhile, the new-car smell is gone.

And those so-called "goods and services" go out the window at about the oh, say, 1-year point into the marriage. So, you have in effect, a life-time of no goods and no services rendered. But then again, people get divorced quickly so, maybe not.

and yes, I do love my boyfriend and would be happy with anything...and he knows that. rings are expensive and I would rather save the money for something else than to have it sitting on my finger. he knows that too.

And I have to share this story: At my girlfriend's last job, her boss was a real trophy wife. Very attractive Asian woman and married to some hot-shot investment banker. She was very proud of her habit of trading in her engagement ring once a year for a bigger, more expensive one. She got tired at looking at the same $40K rock year after year, so each year on her anniversary she'd make that trip to Tiffany. Supposedly the trade-in value of a ring like that is about 60% of the sticker price. So much for your investment.
Don't feel sorry for that guy, though. When she got pregnant he told her that if it was a boy and he was healthy, she'd get a cool $100K to spend at Tiffany. She did have a boy. And one year later they were separated. HA!

Just my 2 cents: I don't want an engagement ring. I'd rather go on a great honeymoon or something else but it is absolutely unconcionable to me for someone to spend in the thousands of dollars on a RING!!
I know I'm part of a tiny minority (I might be the only one in it!) but I seriously couldn't wear it. Kids are dying of hunger in Africa (heck, kids are dying of hunger HERE), and I'm going to ask for a $1,000 or $10,000 or $20,000 engagement ring? I simply couldn't do it. I couldn't live with myself.
I'm not going to judge others who make that choice, but I can't help thinking "How many lives could that $20,000 have saved." Of course there are so many other areas of our lives that this philosophy can be applied to as well, so like I said, I don't judge others, but I'm making it very clear I don't want one at all. Donate the money to a charity (that actually does good work, not to some bureaucracy).

So you'd rather spend money that could go to poor African babies on a great honeymoon? Instead of a ring? If you feel bad about spending it on a diamond instead of starving orphans, you should feel bad about buying any luxuries.
