Buffoon????? Wow, pretty rough crowd. Agree or not, he's just posting a question, you don't have to respond. If someone wants to hang onto the dream till 35 or whatever age, it's their choice. He's saying it doesn't work out for most runners and sometimes ya gotta know when to walk away. If the times listed are legit, then he's been there and is posing the question.

P.s. Not sure but I believe he'll be 71 on September 26, give the guy a break already.

A lot of the top US elite distance runners active now come from well off families (read: rich) and don't necessarily need to have a path to the future.

That's the sad fact the OP is missing out on. They live in a different reality.

i don't know about my fellow millenial scum but i can't imagine trolling on these boards when i'm 70. can't you go drink coffee in a diner for 5 hours or something? reminisce about the eisenhower administration?

One does not agree or disagree with a question. His “question” here is a tool used to express his opinions on the subject, which he has provided ad nauseum. He is entitled to express his opinions on the subject. I am entitled to express my opinion of him...he is a narcissistic buffoon.

Just because boomers were brainwashed into thinking they had to sacrifice happiness for a "good" job in corporate America, doesn't mean the younger, smarter, and healthier generations are making the same mistakes.

The only place that resmbles a diner is Dennys. Too many of your green haired tatooed buddies working as servers turned my stomach.

Most Americans now will have two or three careers before they retire. It's not at all uncommon now for the second career to start after age thirty or forty. For a professional runner running is the first career. For someone else it might have been accounting or sales. The second career for both may well be anywhere from closely related to their first career to almost totally unrelated. People from either group may look for a government job. They have a lot going for them. But a runner looking for a new career is no different than any other comparably educated person doing the same.

OP takes issue with how OT alsorans are living by choice yet does he not realize that for every one of them there are a dozen who didn't make it and spend a decade or more begging for comp entries and free shoes while working at running stores and health club front desks? They probably live in a van to avoid rent in Mammoth, Flag, Boulder and get food stamps and medicaid if eligible, too. Good luck tilting at the windmills of the dirt bag lifestyle in the USA.
