Screw retirement. Just found out someone I know of - 40 years old. 2 young kids. A teacher. Seemingly healthy. Went to bed and never woke up. No guarantee anyone will make it to retirement age. Live each day as tho it might be your last. The only red flag is the original writer of this post.

Almost all medical doctors age 30 (and throw in virtually all 30-year old medical students) have a negative net worth. I think you are focusing on the wrong concept (net worth does not include human capital).

Well, if I lived everyday like it's my last, I would be drunk on expensive wine all the time and have no money from spending it on the aforementioned expensive wine. Something tells me that isn't the best course of action.

I am younger than OP but all I can tell is the guys from work is that the guys who were frugal with their money when they were younger live much better lives and have a lot less stress. The guys who blew it all along the way and then have kids always looks like they are about to have a heart attack when they find out their year end numbers.

Meh. I'm 28 and have about $30k in assets and about $120k in debt. According to you I am more screwed than your gf. I used to save $1,200/m and now that's down to about $300/m since moving into a better area. But my daughter goes to a great school now so I'm very happy.I never plan on retiring because my job (research) is something I love to do and I will never want to "retire." Of course, the intensity will go down in due time.

Anyway OP you shouldn't say your gf is either a parasite or likely to become one, it is not nice. Having said that, it's reasonable to think about about a partner's saving habits. Have you tried discussing it with her?
