Many white people from cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York will spend hours talking about how great it is that they can get Sushi and Tacos on the same street. But then they send their kids to private school with other rich white kids, and live in neighborhoods like Santa Monica or Pacific Palisades.

But it’s important to note that white people to do not like to be called out on this fact. If you run an ethnic restaurant you can be guaranteed repeat business and huge tips if you act like your white customers are adventurous and cultured for eating food that it isn’t sandwiches or pasta.

As a White Person in “flyover country,” I can tell you that most educated white people in the Midwest consider New Yorkers to be completely obnoxious, self-important, and f-ing ridiculous to pay so much just to live in walking distance of lots of ethnic food. In reality, most of these people have no real experience with diversity. Working in an auto factory with people from many different backgrounds is diversity. Orlando, FL

Pros: Close to some of the best slat-water fishing in the world. I'm a cracker. Girls can wear bikinis all year. Close to where some of the best USA runners train. Cam Levin's won that award here. Jenny Simpson is from the area. The band Death is also from the area. Cannibal Corpse lives down the street. So does Deicide. and Obituary. Vanilla Ice and Carrot Top. I could go on.

Cons: Summer.

Albany, NY

Pros: Pretty moderate weather (no tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. and only rare blizzards); easy to navigate; good amount of ethnic diversity; booming nanotech industry; Saratoga Race Track ~45 min. away; short trip to Niagara Falls/Buffalo, Boston, NYC; lots of casual running groups - ARE, HMRRC, etc. - both of which put on great summer race series; decent summer concert series downtown; lots of good places to fish; fairly low cost of living

Cons: Pretty small city; several downtrodden neighborhoods with significant crime; politicians constantly out and about; pretentious suburb population; no pro sports teams; Hudson River is gross because of dredging

Annapolis, MD

Pros: We have waterfront living, beautiful scenery, a large running community, great restaurants and it's close to everything (major cities, Chesapeake Bay, the ocean and the mountains). We also have mild winters (little to no snow), great fishing and lots to do.

Cons: It's a tourist town so everything is ridiculously overpriced. It's also full of rich a-holes, lost tourists, horrible traffic and d-bag Naval Academy kids.

Summary: It's actually a cool town if you can get past how expensive everything is. I highly recommend it.

Peoria, IL:

PROS - Solid Midwest values. Lots of friendly people. Farmers Markets. Big enough to have most everything you need, but small enough to get to know many people. Very strong running community with lots of races about every weekend including the Steamboat Classic. Great trails to run on. Best running store with the most knowledgeable staff around (Running Central.)

About halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, and right across the river from East Peoria. World HQ of Caterpillar, Inc. Home of "World's Most Beautiful Drive" (Grandview Drive) as stated by Teddy Roosevelt. Bradley University. Strong Boy Scout community. Lots of Cardinals baseball fans.

CONS - City government that often sees themselves as big-city, but often come off more like Mayberry (and not in a good way.) Decrepit public school district mired in debt and low test scores. Some larger decaying parts of town with gang and drug issues. Lots of Cubs fans.

San Diego, CA

Pros: Weather (mid 60's to mid 70's year round, not humid, lots of sunshine; summer mornings are cloudy which is perfect for running), lots of beautiful people, very active (cycling, running, swimming, Elliptigoing?) community, good beaches, great Mexican food, decent (but not great) running trails.

Cons: Sometimes too many beautiful people, traffic, runners don't greet you when you pass them (I'm a transplant and find this off-putting), not easy to break into running community (there are running clubs and groups but they all cost $$ to join [everything costs more money in California]).

Syracuse, ny

Pros: we don't have that many shootings any more. Only stabbings. SU basketball.

Cons: this is the snow capital of the usa, expect snow between the months of October and May. Elevated highway running through the middle of the city. Snow. Gigantic tax-free mall that took 20 years to build. Snow. Only about 80 sunny days a year. Snow. At least 4 hours from anywhere interesting. Snow.

Pros: the north side

Cons: the south side

Santa Cruz, Ca

Pros – Fantastic places to run (Dirt trails under the redwoods and long sandy beaches in same run!) Very active community (bike, run, surf, kayak, etc.), small temperature change from summer to winter (average high temperature in summer is mid 70’s – average high temperature in winter is mid 60’s),

Fun down town area, Santa Cruz Track Club fun local group.

Cons – Traffic (Hwy 1 only 2 lanes needs 3 lanes), housing prices, ocean is beautiful – but the water is COLD!

Fort Collins, CO

Pros: Beautiful weather (except when it is windy!), tons of breweries, places to eat, bike trails in town and dirt trails in the hills for running, biker-friendly town, very pet-friendly, big enough (over 100,000) to have everything you need, good parks, relaxed atmosphere.

Cons: College kiddos make it CONSIDERABLY more crowded (summer is awesome!), no hill running in actual town (have to get into the mountains), no competitive running club, forest fires, very dry (this could be a good thing for some people).
