So, I have a question. I wasn't alive in 1980 so I don't really understand all this maybe someone can shed some light on it.

The article mentions a lawsuit that was filled and dismissed, regarding the boycott being a violation of Amateur Sports Act of 1978. Why exactly was the suit dismissed? I mean to me at least it seems that the boycott was a pretty blatant violation of the act. Anyone know what the courts rational was?

Wow! You jump to conclusions quite quickly. I had no idea disagreeing with Carter's boycott of the '80 Olympics automatically made him a crazy conservative. I think Scott shouldn't have characterized Carter the way he did, though. I could understand this rant coming from him 30 years ago as the '80 Games were going on, but now it seems like he should have moved on. And I'm a Republican for what it's worth.

You train for that Olympic moment for years and get it taken away from you due to a political blunder...Ask Bill Rodgers how he feels...these people writing on here are the same people who praise the Olympic Champions..so get your perspectives straight!! Steve Scott, along with others was a great athlete whose potential medal moment was deprived due to BS..and I'm a Democrat, but Carter's presidency except for Camp David was a disaster..if you were'nt alive at the time, you cannot comprehend the times..look at Reagan's election in 1980..how much did he win by??

I was around then, and, in retrospect, Carter's term was more successful than most people realize, or are willing to admit.

Indeed, most of Reagan's first-term success is due to Carter. For example -- it was the Carter administration that initiated airline deregulation. And it was Carter that appointed Paul Volcker as Fed chairman; Reagan wanted to ditch Volcker, but couldn't; consequently, the Fed managed to break the inflationary cycle caused by Vietnam-era spending and the OPEC shenanigans.

It was Carter, not Reagan who initiated the big naval buildup -- recall that he was a Naval Academy grad and selected by Hyman Rickover for the nuclear sub program. Carter probably understood the military side of things as well as any president in the 20th century other than Eisenhower.

That Carter lost the 1980 election was as much a consequence of the brutal primary race with Ted Kennedy as anything Reagan did -- not unlike the 1976 Republican primary, in which Reagan's challenge was thought to have hurt Ford in the general election.

Everyone castigates Carter for the Eagle Claw debacle, despite the fact that the failure was entirely a military failiure that ultimately led to the Goldwater-Nichols Act. Carter stepped up, took the blame, and protected the Eagle Claw team from recriminations.

The Reagan administration included disasters like the bombing of the Beirut Marine barracks. No one seems to blame Reagan for that, despite the evidence that the Beirut mess was as much an administration failure as a military failure. And there was Iran-Contra, of course.

In addition to his ill-considered Olympic boycott, there was also the grain embargo. No one can say that Carter let re-election sway him when he was making some big decisions in 1979-80.

Sure Steve was upset about missing a chance to run in the '80 Games. Had you been alive at that time and had any ability to meet any standard for the Games you would have been upset too. Your opinion won't get published and his does. I believe even you can figure why that is.

Procuring a bunch of weapons for "when the balloon goes up" might qualify somebody as a wack job.

Having known an athlete affected by Carter's decision, I understand how Steve Scott feels. I knew a young lady who was the top qualifier in her event in 1980, but after leading the world for the next few years, ended up placing third in qualifying in 1984. So, after years of dominance, she ended up as an alternate and never participated in the Olympic games.

In order to pursue her dream, she moved across the country as a young girl to train in California. It was devastating to finally reach her goal of making the Olympic team and have it taken away. At the time, I remember feeling so bad for all the athletes who had their dreams stripped because of his decision.

This young woman later followed in her father's footsteps and has had a successful career as a physician. However, she remains bitter about Carter's decision - her family is anything but conservative and had voted for Carter.

Those words were not chosen without some tonality.

Steve Scott needs to get therapy, and move on. He was FAR too easily stirred up about something SO long ago that he should have made peace with.

At least one Olympic team member from the 1980 team committed suicide -- in response to the boycott, was THAT emotional response "reasonable," or "understandable"?

Bravo to Steve Scott! Well spoken and I like him even more now. Of course, he was relatively easy on Carter. He only lambasted him for making ONE horrible decision.

He could have skewered him for habitually making horrible decisions and being a horrible president in general. Carter is an elitist, intellectual ass and his miserable presidency landed like a haymaker to the jaw of this country.

Your comments only prove how ignorant you are. Scott has done more for this world and impacted more people than the vast majority of us ever will. Just because you are not familar with his other accomplishments does not mean he has contributed nothing to the world. He has had more of an impact on this world than most people ever do. Scott has every right to be angry at Carter. Carter's foolish decision only hurt US athletes, it had no effect on the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Do you have any idea how good and how lucky you have to be to make an Olympic team? Ask Alan Webb and Jim Spivey, two guys who everyone figured were shoo ins and they both missed making a team and had/have to wait four years to try again. But to have your dream stolen for some useless political statement!! Damn right Scott should be angry and I don't blame him for being bitter. Sure life is not fair, but that doesn't mean you have to sick back and eat the shit sandwich with a smile.
