Just offering some point - counterpoint.
I should know better than to let posts on "Let's Run" get me riled up. This site is vicious.
Richard, Dont let this site get you down. You and the gate team have done really well and gotten a great field together. This will be one heck of a race.
Hey Owen, It would also be fun to have some Florida team competition. There could be Open, Masters and Grandmasters team competition for men and women. I have raced the Jax River Run over ten times and my personal best 15k is from back in the early 1980s on the course. I think it would really help to get more of the top runners from the state and make it a Florida competition in addition to the national team competition. It's too bad the race conflicts with the Winter Park 10k this year as most of Orlando's top runners won't be able to make it.

Hello Richard,
Thanks for offering a team competition (with prize money even!) at your race. Though our team won't be participating, we do run a lot of team competitions. Hopefully yours will go well this year!
I didn't read this whole thread so excuse me if there is some repeating of other ideas...but thoughts for the future if not this year...
1) It is great to post (in advance) what teams are entered. Most road races we compete in do not let you know in advance who the competition is. So, it is always a mystery until results are posted as to how you did (team wise), or even if there was any competition.
2) Many of these road team competitions don't post team results for a week or even longer. What other sport do you have to wait that long to find out where you placed? The Boston Marathon is a notable exception. With Boston - it is even possible to follow how teams are doing check-point to check-point. They know how to make a team feel as though they are not a poor step-child to the main event. (It's certainly still not the main event at Boston; but at least you don't feel like a distant afterthought.)
3) Most team road races do not publicize the winners of the team events. That is probably due to the length of time it takes them to figure out the results. But, if you have them on race day, let the local press know about them. And, list the individual runners on the team.
4) Having everyone in the same singlet is nice but shouldn't be an absolute necessity. Our team has a number of runners that have been fortunate enough to get sponsored individually by shoe stores, shoe companies, their employer, and others. They still like to represent the team, but the team is unable to match (in any way) what these sponsors are giving them. (Our runners pay all expenses.) With so little money available in this sport, I encourage runners to grab what perks they can. But, I don't think that should make them ineligible for team competitions. But, if all matching singlets are an absolute necessity for a competition, (i.e. USATF Club Nationals) we run in them. In that case, individual runners work things out with their sponsors.
5) If there are awards presented to the members of the team, (and they are not awarded on race day - which they are not likely to be) send them out individually to the team members. In one race our team won, we waited a week for the results, then two months for the awards, then we had to send postage to the race director to have them sent out (to me), then I had to pay postage again to send them to the runners.
Anyhow, just some things to think about to have a first class team event from a team manager's perpective.
Relayfred
Thanks relayfred -
We are going to post team results immediately after the race - and hand out all awards on stage - even before the individual awards.
We cannot do matching singlets for all due to binding shoe contracts.
Thanks for the good ideas.
I particularly like the "real time" checkpoint idea.
We don't have the technology for that yet, but will explore for next year.
In response to you telling a poster to get their facts straight - No, you need to get YOUR facts straight.
I know for a fact that both Carney and Hartmann currently live in Boulder. I also know for a fact that Hudson no longer coaches Hartmann. Heard it from the horse's mouth.
soxshujaz, were you beaten as a kid ?

Team championships have been a part of every national road championship for at least the past 20 years. It's in the rules. The regulations governing them are also in the rules.
If this is true then Gate has to have 2 awards. One for their set of rules and one for those that follow the USATF rules. IT IS MANDATED. In addition USATF should only recognize the USATF winner in all of their media releases.
Gate has every right to make up their own rules. USATF does not.
Hey Richard,
Just wanted to say this is a great idea and I know alot of people are really excited for it. A great field on a great course. Best of luck and I look forward to the results!

I have been reading these post with interest, and feel myself with a sense of deja vu.
I am probably twice as old as most of the posters here, and am afraid many don't know, appreciate or remember the origins of USATF.
In the late 70s, distance runners in the US, led by pioneers such as Frank Shorter and Don Kardong, rebelled against the AAU. They were tired of having to take money under the table and created their own spin-off in 1979, The Athletics Congress, which has morphed into USATF.
Fortunately, USATF remembers it's heritage, and provides a very valuable service to our sport. But they also realize that the sport of distance running is always changing, and they are open-minded enough and flexible enough to allow team competitions to occur within their individual championship races, that may operate under a different set of rules.
Refusing to budge from their rulebook was the AAU's undoing, and has made them virtually powerless for 30 years now.
Kudos to USATF for recognizing and allowing what is good for the recognition and interest of road racing. And kudos to Gate River Run for pioneering a "big money" team concept.
Damn straight !
Too much complaining, sour grapes and too many hidden agendas here.
Put up the money, suit 'em up and let em run !
Woo Ha !
Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.
Good for you Jack !

Good for you Jack !
Spot on Crotchety Old Timer !
And did you notice it always seems to be 15k races bucking the trend ?
In the late 1970s, the two races that "flew in the face of danger" and openly awarded prize money were The Midland Run and The Cascade Run Off - both 15ks.
The elite runners (Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Greg Meyer, Herb Lindsay, et. al) put their amateur status on the line and told the AAU to cram it !
Word is Ritz is out...
My prediction for top 10
1.) Jorge Torres
2.) James Carney
3.) Dan Browne
4.) Tim Nelson
5.) Ed Moran
6.) Sean Quigley
7.) Fasil Bizuneh
8.) Brett Gotcher
9.) Andrew Carlson
10.) Anthony Famiglietti
11.) Ian Dobson
Yes, I am sorry to report that Dathan Ritzenhein has withdrawn from the race, which also means that Marathon Performance is also out of the team competition.
