Judging by leg turn-over he's on pace to run 154.8518 miles.

I went down to my high school track and ran around it at that pace. It was easy.

Good God. Please get off your high horse. You and Dean K. have a lot in common. You're both arrogant. Although Dean's arrogance doesn't bother me as much because it's almost comical. Running the world record for a 24 hr. run while raising a shitload of money for medical research does not constitute a "stupid human trick" in my book. He's doing something that most other runners absolutely cannot do (or are not willing to do).

Maybe running 150+ miles at 9:00 pace is not a phenomenal feat of human athleticism (although I still say it's impressive), but it's still very difficult and he's raising money for a good cause while he does it. I'm not saying that I think DK is America's Greatest Runner. I don't think that at all. But I really don't feel the need to bash and protest the guy.

How is he hurting you?? Oh I know. He's hurting the sport of running. Bullshit. The sport is hurting itself because it's "star" athletes have no personality (and the ones that do get bashed for being "cocky" or "flamboyant"), track meets are boring as hell, and USATF sucks at marketing.

What a toolbag. It's one thing to do this kind of shit at a random time, but to try to steal publicity from USATFs makes him a real f*** hole.

He probably doesn't know that USATFs are going on.

what a tool bag indeed - it is great that he is taking money and pub that could be going to you guys! hehe, like taking candy from babies. it is doubtful that "real running" will ever change from what it is now because guys like Dean, Oprah, Lance, Galloway, etc. take action and shape the direction of running while you dolts just whine and complain.

I think he's fading, and needs to pick up the pace to break the record. GOOOOOOO DEANOOOOOO!

I am not a Dean fan and think it s funny...but lets be real here, he's not stealing anything. There is plenty of TV time for everyone, plenty of webspace. Is a walk on your cross country team "stealing" from the full scholarship athletes if he has a newspaper article about him or he ends up being shown on TV? Come on, there is plenty to go around.

The problem is not with Dean but with the USATF. The USATF fails to do its job!

To those who are wondering about his slowing down,

at the halfway point he had been running 9:05 pace and needed a 9:40 pace to finish.

He is now averaging a 9:23 pace and needs 9:17 to break the record.

I also give him major credit that it's 78 degrees according to the website. That HAS to suck.

I wonder if the guy who set the record did it inside, with A/C or perfect temperatures???

Dean is slipping. He no longer has a cushion. I calculated that at 9:25.45 to go he would run 146.2741 miles at his current pace of 5.6 mpr.

What kind of crap is that? They're right though...Dean sure does give Meb, Ryan Hall, and Ritzenhein a run for their money.

There is nothing wrong with bashing DK. He puts himself out there for public consumption. Some of the public will marvel others will not.

I detest him because he is turning the sport of running and the people who do it into sideshow freaks. I spent a lot of my formative years with this labor of love and to see DK desecrate the sport drives me bananas. Others whose life experiences differ from mine probably get a kick out of it and are emboldened to take their "running" to a new level. Good for them but that doesn't change my level of resentment. Does that make me petty, small, tiny or whatever other attributes the lovers give to the haters? Probably not.

Another problem I have with it is that I want our best and most talented runners to make a living off of their accomplishments and running fast. If they can make more money with false claims and doing their best impression of a hamster then that hurts our sport. More and more the public appetite for running is predicated not on wins or losses but rather what kind of stunt can you perform. He is an affront to me and the sport that I love. But that's just me, I bet the penguins and Gallow-Walkers are going nuts right now...too bad for me.

Now let's get back to the action until the 10k tonight. I'm actually looking forward to the letsrun.com play by play tonight...
