A few points RE Webb. Awesome seeing him do so well. This year he has become world class. Personally I think this should show Willis what he could also do if he can put things together. I believe that Willis is the more talented runner, but Webb's agressive style of racing suits him and I would like to see Willis mix it up a little more.
At this stage Webb is clearly better, and although I would like to see Willis beat him at WC's, even if this does happen it should not take away from Webb's incredible season.
I think the real test will be Beijing.
I don’t care about the Webb v Willis thing that much but I just wanted to clarify something...Willis did make it further at the Olympics than Webb, and at the world champs Nick went out to easily the hardest competition, only for Webb to make the final and utterly embarrass and disgrace the USA in the process. We laughed so hard when Webb hit the front...f'en classic, America at it’s...ummm...best.

yeah i am at uni, but my girlfriend isnt, she runs for gb and is only 15. dont get me wrong, i think willis will gt further in the world champs as webb is a clown. my girlfriend agrees too and she has run at teh world cross.

Willis PB's: 1:45.54, 3:32.17, 3:52.75, 7:44.90, 13:27.54
Obviously, Webb has the better collection of PB's. This is usually how one runner is compared to another. The only argument for Willis' superiority would be if he had experienced significantly more championship-level success than Webb, which he hasn't, or if he had established a history of consistently beating Webb in head-to-head situations, which he hasn't.
Imagine that Webb and Willis stepped onto a track for a 1500 meter match race, just the two of them. If you had to bet your life on the outcome, would you honestly pick Willis? Given what's happened in the last 6 weeks?
Webb is at a level right now that Willis may never get to.
this is quite redundant atm, I think the match race situation would only play to willis's strengths though..
For the record I think Webb will always have the fastest PB's out of these two, it seems to be in webbs nature to come up with some freakish performances, but it would not greatly surprise me if willis were to beat him at WC and OG's where peaking for the one race and tactical savvy are more important.
Yeah.. a match race would be the most likely situation that Willis would beat Webb, wheras in a normal race Webb would be clear favourite.

where does Willis get this reputation as some tactical genius? he has made exactly ZERO wc/oly finals, won exactly ONE ncaa title (and it was indoors), and his only international win of note was in the commonwealth games, where his only strong competition (Mottram) fell and was out of the race. he made it one round further than Webb at the '04 olympics, and one round less than Webb at the '05 world champs. it seems like they're about even in that regard.
oh, and Webb (who has always been the stronger of the two) now has the more explosive kick... for now, Webb is MUCH better. that is to say, in any kind of 1500m race (slow, fast, negative split, positive split, windy, hot, in a vacuum, etc.), Webb would easily beat Willis right now.
I would not describe Webbs kick as explosive yet, he has kicked well off steady to fast races, but to get through rounds comfortably he is going to have to kick very hard off 3.40 pace. (which to his credit he did at USA's. last year maybe?).
It is true willis's so called tactical advantage hasn't actually netted him that much hardware yet, but there has been good examples of it paying dividends for him. World Juniors he ran very smart to PB in the final and get 4th. His first year at NCAA's he was tearing it up and gapping everyone in the rounds only to be tripped in the final... where most people seem to agree he was favourite.
If you are able to watch the olympic and wc heats from 04 and 05 again do so, and watch closely how willis and webb run and carry themselves through the prelimenaries.. willis just tagged along at the back of the field then weved up and through to contest.. whereas webb was up and down in and out getting jostled and running wide etc which I think if they were both in the same race in the same condition would see willis probably reign surpreme...
But, thats the thing Webb is in such good shape at the moment he can probably get away with a few chinks in his tactical armour.

At the start of the season it was neck and neck. clearly Webb has run bloody quick in the last month in Europe and now has better pb's. Willis hasn't raced at all since may(???).
these types of things have to be done on the basis of a year as a whole to get a fair indication with regards to peaking etc
