There is a coming food shortage in the US. Farmers are burying food. The restaurant buyers have shrunken. Food banks are facing massive shortages. This is a huge disconnect caused by the way food is sold and locked in contracts, and the difference in how food is packaged between small pack consumers and bulk buyers. The failure here is Trump and his Agriculture Secretary, Sonny Perdue. It took Perdue a month before acting because he seemed more worried that Trump would get angry.

I'm not saying this isn't happening, because I am sure it is, but it just doesn't seem like this should be all that difficult a problem to solve. In my city we have bought several boxes of produce from a restaurant supply company. They have shifted to a consumer order by internet/contactless pickup which has worked well for us. I am sure it is not replacing their entire business. It has reduced our need for grocery shopping and reduced the length of grocery trips.

I’ve been in his state of Florida since early March and have observed some unsurprising things. There are lots of very proud trump supporters here of course. You see some American flags and then you see massive trump banners like “Trump 2020 - No More BulIshit”. These people are totally sold. Presumably the Democrats are modest since I have not seen one big sign yet.

I’ve gotten on a lot of boat rides with my sister and just about the whole boating community around here is made up of tzees, and they make you know it. You’re basically getting bad looks if you don’t have a trump flag. They are boating around in large groups with overly loud bad music, obviously not all from the same household, flaunting their right to be a$$holes and to get themselves, family and friends infected. Otherwise I see everyone practicing social distancing and behaving like decent human beings.

We got to speak with one friend of my sister’s whose boyfriend is a full blown tzee. He immediately threw out a comment about Yankees (not the baseball team) and kept taking a stab at politics, which he knew nothing about. He threw out Deep State once to give you an idea. Clearly trump is a god and the only god of America and anyone who has anything critical to say is just a Mexican-loving snowflake traitor. I almost asked about his missing teeth and what he thought about the economy and market but why waste my breath even trolling a ? like that? I can only imagine trigged is like or worse than this guy.

The food supply does not work with sudden switches. Crops cannot sit in the fields for a month waiting for someone to buy up the food before it starts to rot, and attract bugs. There is also the problem that crops must be cleared (sold, buried) to make way for planting the next crop. In other words, there is no way to get the lost month back. And there is no plan from the Trump Administration on how to fit the problem.

To add to the self-inflicted injury, Trump has denied all farm guest workers entry into the U.S., and farmers are facing a labor shortage. There are a lot of out of work Americans. But if you know the history of farming, white Americans have no interest in doing that type of work.

Does anyone else expect that Trump's solution will be to force out of work Americans to work in the fields in order to continue getting government benefits? That used to be called slave labor. Not that Trump would be worried about that, and not that Trump would care how hard it would be for farmers to get Americans to do that type of work (complaints, inefficiency, crop damage).

Farm workers should be paid a living wage. If you give them $15 and hour then Americans will gladly do the job.
