New York City is unique in this situation. You think mentioning that Texas has 5 of the most 13 populous cities in the country means anything here, but it just doesn't. That 5th city is Fort Worth, and it had 895,000+ residents in 2018. New York, which is the most populous and more importantly most-densely populated city in the country had 8,398,000+ residents, more than twice that of the second-largest city, Chicago. There just is no comparison. For you to call this a partisan issue on a city level when Trump disbanded the Pandemic Response Team and cut funding to the CDC and cut Dr. Fauci off when he was asked a question, is beyond stupid. You are stupid and a fool. Go find something you might be good at. Understanding this issue is not it.

The numbers above probably don't mean much to you unless you are mathematically inclined. So,, today I will present to you a single fact that should be accessible to everyone. Feel free to ask questions.

The following is not an opinion.
It is not a prediction.
It is a mathematical certainty.
A fact.
FACT: The entire US economy is going to be shut down by COVID-19 within the next 6 months.
That means that if you cannot work from home then you will be told to not work. Exceptions will be made for individuals working in the food supply chain, the medical supplies and care supply chain, public utilities such as electricity, gas, water, garbage . . . , police, fire departments, etc. Everyone else who cannot work from home will have no work for a period of time.
Every school will be shut down. Every gathering will be cancelled. Every single city and town in this country is going to look like a ghost town. Nobody will be outside. And when they are forced outside they will be wearing masks. They will be scared of each other and will cross the street to stay on opposite sides whenever their paths cross.
This is not a possibility.
This is a fact.
A mathematical certainty.

There remain two options for us:
1) Shut down now: In this case, we will end up looking like South Korea. Even better than South Korea. The idiots among us (you know who you are, Sally) will say, "What?!? We shut down the entire US for a disease that caused a few hundred deaths?!? That's crazy!!!" Those who have some intelligence will say "Phew!" and will thank whatever god they recognize that the US somehow pulled itself out of the muck to act decisively and on time.
2) Wait three months and then shut it down: In this case, we will be Italy. Millions will die. Many of them will die after being turned away from hospitals with no capacity to help them. They will go back to their homes after being turned away and their families will watch them slowly suffocate on their living room floors. Then their bodies will remain for days because nobody will be available to take them away with the proper respects.
Those are our options.

This is from March 13, a month ago. Before the shutdown. A day we had just 7 deaths across the entire nation.

Have to say this was great post.

At this point, Biden has a greater chance of winning Texas than Trump does of winning OH.

Nothing to get around really. The US is a large nation which was late in moving to SIP. Hence, bad numbers. I was one of the first and "most alarmist" to point out the coming tsunami on here. The maths told me and I told you that way back when (if you were reading at the time). Now the maths say that everything is moving, and moving very strongly, in the other direction. Sorry (well, not really) but the US daily death rate is about to drop, just as the author knows and I know (but apparently you do not).

I assume by this that you mean we are nowhere near the maximum daily death toll. If so, you are simply wrong. The US is very, VERY close to the maximum daily death toll. How about we make a friendly bet. I bet that within one week the US daily death toll will be less than the high to date of 2035 and will be falling like a rock. You want to take the other side of that bet?

No. He's safer now than he was when the pandemic began because nearly everyone else got the message to stay at home. If you read the article and understood it then you would understand this. You would also understand that it is correct.

You misunderstood something that I wrote. I was not saying that the US was nowhere near its peak daily death toll - I would have used the qualifier "daily" if I had meant that; I didn't. I was referring to the total death toll. You are arguing against something I didn't say.

Your last point, when you say the mathematician is safer because everyone else is staying home, and not because he is, also shows that you didn't understand what I was saying, which is that social distancing is the only thing that is giving anyone a measure of safety in this pandemic. It is key to the whole thing.

So what that tells you about the general public is that the most dangerous time to be out and about was 12 to 7 days before the peak. After that, you are generally safer and safer each day.

Furthermore, because you are riding down an exponential function, you are getting safer exponentially.

Therefore, if we are at the peak of new hospitalizations, you can be quite sure that (in New York) it is safer to be out now than it was a week or two ago.

That being said, the mathematician should not let his guard down just yet. There is still plenty of virus out there.

Good day in Italy again: daily growth in deaths down 30% Sunday over Saturday.

Which makes the 7 day average negative, at -1% per day.

I know, Sunday and Easter. But the 7 day average should take some of that cyclicality out. And that is good too.
