Yes, I was alongside doctors right when they were released. They told me right then and there they didn’t know how well they’d prevent transmission and breakthrough infection and that it was still being looked into. No coverup. Those of us who went to go get vaccinated in late 2020/early 2021 went maskless right away before the delta variant came.
initially US estimated (this was back in like Feb 2020) that this virus would be so bad that 1% would die of COVID-19 (~3million). Fortunately, it looks like it did not turn out to be nearly as bad, and we have the temporary measures like masking/lockdowns to thank and later the vaccines to help a ton with that. is it perfect? No It sucks for us all to have had to go through this.
So they made up a number, 3 million, and when actual deaths fall far short of this, they took credit for this citing the measures they took.

Sometimes drugs do get approved that are dangerous but fortunately it is rare and we have good systems in place to deal with data fudgers and fraudsters. The case fatality rate for the Diamond Princess cruise ship incident was about 1%.
This happened very early in the pandemic and was, by happenstance, about as controlled an experiment in "how many people die from a novel infectious disease" as one could hope for. We know now, and it was suspected then, that the estimate was high because of that sample's age bias, but it was the best data available at the time.
There will always significant caveats with incomplete data but they aren't "made up".

Another thing I've noticed is when they do happen to reference an article, they only show the title, which is enough to convince the laypeople that they have a point. But if you actually look at the paper it's not at all suggesting what they think.
