The notion that because we have lots of guns we could effect a different outcome is incredibly naive and simplistic.
The Taliban were going to take over when we left. Any Taliban takeover was always going to be chaotic and terrifying for those remaining.

The swiftness of their complete takeover is being highlighted but interesting to note the terror and chaos aspect is not worse than it could be. The Taliban has even posted security in front of humanitarian aid offices and vowed not to mess with them. This could have been much uglier. The hysteria is overdone - everyone saw this coming.
