Total COVID cases across the USA have nosed over downwards...the same thing happened in the UK and I think the Netherlands, after a similar sharp Delta runup. Maybe elsewhere.
Obviously too early to be very hopeful but maybe the US will have the same relatively quick and unexpected improvement during this wave. And maybe the fear of delta will get many millions more to get jabbed, which is the most important thing.

but clearly Afghanistan has chosen to go the Islamic State route. Another 10 years of occupation would not change that. They'd still choose Islam over liberal western values. So best to get out now and stop the madness.
Politically the Rs will try to make hay on this but come on - trumpists wanted us out of Afghanistan more than the Ds wanted out of Afghanistan. No. It's been evident for the past 10 years that this was always going to be the outcome. No amount of guns, logistics, or money was going to change that.
The Pentagon has been asking for "just a few more years and a couple 100 billion more dollars" for the past 15 years, but enough is finally enough. The only other option that could have worked was complete Victorian era style colonization, but that's sort of looked down upon these days.

The notion that because we have lots of guns we could effect a different outcome is incredibly naive and simplistic.
The Taliban were going to take over when we left. Any Taliban takeover was always going to be chaotic and terrifying for those remaining.

Yeah, I think after 20 years and $1T it was reasonable to expect the much larger Afghan army and its leadership to be able to hold the fort for a couple of weeks at least. Beyond the US personnel we have to securely move out still it’s all in their hands now.
I’m likely wrong but I hope our failed Afghanistan campaign becomes a learned lesson. These things just don’t work. We have to keep our troops the fk away from enemy soil, especially when no one is welcoming us.
