Russia is why. Putin is up to something there. As the U.S. evacuates the country, Russia is staying put. The Taliban is providing security for Russians in the country. The Taliban is taking over Kabul peacefully. They have ordered their fighters not to enter the city. And Russia has decided to manage the UN Security Council response and let the other Security Council members (US, Britain, France, China) follow their lead.

That Afghanistan would come under Taliban control was 100% inevitable. It was just a question of when. Should have happened 15 years ago.

The reality is that most of DC and probably most Americans support this even though it's a tough pill to swallow. But, as alluded to, whoever ended up doing it was going to take a political hit because God forbid we agree on anything these days.
