The first one is easier since we don't know what is in the reconciliation bill. I'm actually more interested in #2, but maybe we should discuss #1 first.

For #1, House Democrats are saying they won't pass the bipartisan bill until Senate Democrats pass the reconciliation bill. That's a very heavy lift with Manchin and Sinema saying they have serious reservations.

Sinema seems to be willing to deal if they can get the price down.

I'm not sure what Manchin has on his mind. Haven't actually heard anything lately.

If they can get both bills to pass it should go down as the most amazing legislative achievement ever. And here I'm not talking about the contents of the legislation. Just the fact that this "two-bill" strategy is so crazy and yet it's brilliant at the same time.

EVs are taking over whether you like it or not. EVs are safer, perform better, and they cost less. The age of the internal combustion engine is over. Almost every auto maker agrees with me.

Well, I don't think that we should be TOO hard on folks (like me) who aren't terribly enthralled by infrastructure legislation (!).

In my defense, I guess I'm preoccupied with the whole "One of our 2 parties doesn't really want the U.S. to be the U.S. anymore," thing. Which actually does go back to legislation, because I don't really understand how VOTING legislation isn't the clear-and-away #1 priority for the Democrats?

Fire departments don’t have the right equipment to effectively put these fires out. The damage they do are horrific and the strain on resources are immense. 👎👎👎 I couldn’t in good conscience park one in my garage knowing my family is at risk. 👎👎👎👎💣💣💣

As I understand it, the rules for reconciliation only allow for nominal budget legislation, so there is not clear legislative path for voting rights legislation. The potential options are to make it a campaign issue or get rid of the filibuster and the latter doesn't have sufficient support across the Democrat coalition to succeed.

So even if we agree that infrastructure is less important than voting rights protections there's an apparent opportunity to legislatively affect infrastructure and not so much voting rights.

That's my understanding as well.

It does raise an inconsistency in someone like Manchin. He is dead set against ending the filibuster and is taking what he claims is a very principled stand. But he doesn't rule out voting for a reconciliation plan whose sole purpose is to circumvent the filibuster.
