Sandra Vi going for record across America

Over the last several minutes, the Tracker has said Mimi has gone from 1MPH to 3MPH to 4 MPH to 6 MPH to 3MPH, back to 4MPH.

Look Markus will probably confirm this, that the only way one has a chance in this long of distance is to maintain steady pace for hours on end, and definitely not be frequently spurting up to 6MPH. It almost suggests they are using somebody on a bicycle that is trying to gage speed.

That, or the RaceDrone is next to worthless for speed, as evidently, the Company man has already admitted.

Should have gone with Garmin! You know the old saying, "Nobody got fired for buying IBM." Duh, they are only trying to establish a World Record here. Why did they chintz on one of the most important pieces, the live tracker?!?

Both the RaceDrone tracker as the Garmin Delorme that Sandy is using, are useless for speed indications. Both use satellites to define their current position, the difference is that the RD tracker uses the mobile network to send that position to the server, while the Garmin uses also satellites to send that position. This means that when there is no mobile coverage, the Garmin has the advantage (but it has other disadvantages compared to the RD tracker, such as GPS precision, weight, and other things).

The Garmin Delorme takes a position every 2 minutes (which is the most expensive monthly payment plan Garmin offers), and I assume that the RD tracker has the same or a similar time interval to take positions. Compared to a gps watch which takes a position every second, this explains why you can not accurately measure speed with a gps tracker.

The question was asked before why using a gps tracker then. Simple answer, only to know where somebody is located at that moment, which then is used as a safety tool in ultra races, as a spectator tool to see 'live tracking' and in attempts like Sandy's and Mimi's to show the public where they can find the runners if they want to join them for a run. Nothing more, nothing less...

For data like speed, cadence and things like that, both runners are wearing a gps watch, from which they then provide the data (in a non-realtime mode).

So, I've taken a look at the event website, and the developer posted two copies of the tracking map. The one on the homepage which is the one that everyone is seeing doesn't have the caveat statement I supplied in August. The copy of the tracking map buried in a sub menu does. I've just emailed her web developer and asked him to ensure the same statement is shown prominently on the tracking map on the homepage. That simple act might have saved Mimi's team getting earache. As follows "The tracker’s “speed” is only estimated, based on accelerometer reading from each location update, and not an averaged mph reading. The tracker relies on the availability of 2g and/or 3g networks to transmit the location data. All times are in GMT.

They have also promised to stay on top of ensuring the trackers remain charged"

The tracker was off in a 3g area and was showing 85% charged, so the excuses are shite

In retrospect, your post nailed it several days ago. The Sandi effort is being legitimately logged, whereas, Mimi's live tracker data appears to be almost worthless.

No, it does not, if the tracker is still logging (but not uploading) position in those two minutes, then averaging/interpolating the logged data.

And this will be the future of running. Eventually the bigger marathons, as well as bigger road races, will have instant tracking for all of the competitors. Every competitors data can be compared to the race GPS points, and the pacing data confirmed. If the data is out of whack then those runner are automatically challenged and more then likely booted from the results. The confirmation could occur as each runner finishes and before any awards are given out; especially money. Race cheating in terms of actually running the race will become a thing of the past.

If enough people use the two minute tracking the price will come down.

They both use GPS navigation, the Garmin uses the Irridium network which is quite good, but the RD tracker uses both GPS and Glonass, and has a slightly better GPS chip compared to the Garmin. So both are more or less equal in getting a satellite position location.

On your second comment: exactly, that's my whole point, your Garmin GPS watch is excellent for that, a Garmin Delorme GPS tracker is not.

On your third comment: It does not take positions in between those 2 minutes. It doesn't have the battery to take so many positions and send them to a server. If it would be able, why wouldn't there be gps watches available that could provide live online tracking for days in a row without recharching the batteries.

At the moment it's a matter of 2 things:

- For full satellite trackers like the Garmin Delorme or the SPOT beacon, sending more often than once every couple minutes will stay incredibly expensive because the data has to go over the satellites.

- For both the full satellite trackers and the gprs trackers (which still take their position via satellite), at the moment, battery is the main issue. For shoter events like marathons and such, you could provide runners with a gps tracker submitting their position every second, but the batteries would typically only last hours. But of course in a couple years, that hurdle will be taken also I assume

It looks like that the tracking system that Mimi Anderson is using is tracking nothing.

If you look at Sandy's tracker you can see her speed at different points of the day. Of course that is not 100% accurate but probably kind of close to reality.

Mimi, her support car, and her RV all stopped tracking at 20:34 GMT (1:34 Colorado Time). Fifty minutes have passed since live tracking was last used. There is a real town just a few miles from where the tracking stopped. The RV is in that town (Las Animas, CO).

Check the Garmin website. They provide small battery powered (up to 16 hrs) trackers that can log (e.g., 20000 points) with LiveTrack capability.

How can they possibly be taking stops of 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there, and another 50 minutes there....and then, nonetheless, end up with there 53 miles at the end of the day? (rolls eyes emoticon)

They do have, and they will have even better in the future. But 16h is not enough for any decent ultra-race at the moment. Most events that have live tracking go on for 2-3 days or even more...

Dude, they can (and are doing so) charge their batteries on their devices daily, overnight, in this so-called World Record Attempt.
