What is wrong with you people?
Not getting under 2:30? Please. If you knew his history, you would realize getting under 2:30 will be no big deal. Anecdotally (see my other post), he might have been running under 16:00 minutes in the 5K as a 16 yr old. He could have done near 2:30 back THEN if he trained for it.
Like most runners, I get a kick knowing I can exert so much more physical energy than your average joe. I come back from lunch running an easy 6 in mid-90s heat when my colleagues won't even walk to the corner deli. It's also somewhat of an ego boost to know that I can run down virtually anyone at my gym. But, GIVE-ME-A-BREAK, we runners do not have a monopoly on greatness, endurance, Max VO2, mitochondria, capillaries, and all those other things that make us good at what we do.
Lance, unlike all great athletes in other sports, has a frame suitable for running. Plenty of 5'10"/150lbs very good runners out there. He has a stellar Max VO2. He has great aerobic endurance. He is not Robbie McEwan who probably couldn't break 20 minutes in a 5K. He is the premier mountain climber on the Tour. These are the "runners" on bikes. I cannot keep up with my biking friends on a ride unless we are going uphill. I easily take them up virtually any hill that extends more than a mile. Have any of you ever done even 2 miles on a 15% grade hill on a bike? It is a menacing workout. El G cannot win the tour, but he is a likely Polka Dot jersey guy.
It is within a realm of possibility for him to do 2:15. He was a former world class triathlete. It will be tough, but to dismiss it is foolish.
2:30 will be a piece of cake. I hope he does it.
