Sad day for sure. I will find it funny to see this play out. A high school coach is going to step in and save Oregon with no understanding of NCAA rules. Then there's the Rupp and Chock thing. Well, neither have NCAA eligibility so the two quacks will have to find athletes with eligibility.
As upset as I am for Martin, I'm happier he has left just so all you idiots will see what you had when Smith was there. You can blame Smith no longer, but I'll bet you continue to blame him for years to come when you don't have your little Oregon distance team winning a national title.

I’ve tried to resist commenting on this issue for quite some time now, but due to the inaccuracies and complete ignorance of some of the people who have posted, I feel like I should say a few things. Dustin Lamareaux, you won’t have to search very hard to, “try to find one Oregon distance runner who liked him (Smith).” I admit that Coach Smith is not a perfect fit for all runners, but the large majority of his athletes think very highly of him; including me. There have been a few over the years who have voiced their dislike for him, but the large majority of his athletes like him and do not want to run for anyone else!
BFM, you said that “Phil Knight didn’t have any part of this.” You couldn’t be any more incorrect! Phil Knight and Alberto Salazar had everything to do with this. Perhaps you shouldn’t post on issues that you are so far removed from and you apparently know nothing about. Nike has withheld hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding that they had already promised to Oregon, because they wanted Coach Smith out. That is a fact! Coach Smith was forced out because Nike has bought out the athletic department.
You also said, “None of the people in Eugene have really liked Martin since he moved to Eugene.” Once again you are showing your ignorance. There are plenty of people who like Coach Smith here in Eugene, and they are happy with the fact that Oregon has the best track program that they have had in a long time. I wish you could have been there to see the looks on the athletes’ faces when they found out that Coach Smith was leaving. I think you would realize that there are plenty of us here in Eugene who “like” Coach Smith.
It’s a shame that an athletic department at a public university can be bought out like this. None of us athletes wanted Smith gone, but there’s not much that we can do about it.
I was there on the team when Martin was brought in. He had one task, to bring prominence to Oregon Distance Running. Dellinger was blamed for focusing too much on the Dual Meet Team, and for not recruiting like Standford or Arkansas. But when a 17 year asst. coach came up for the job, he was told sorry you will put too much focus on the field events. He lost his job.. Smith came in with the backing of everyone, locals and nike.. He burnt bridges from the get go. I could tell many a first hand experience of this. Now the field events outpace the distance program, which is Smith's contribution to the program. This is business. He couldn't produce what he promised. He is gone. End of story.

I hope Oregon cuts track & field. No wait, only after they go on probation for competing ineligible runners and these asses are exposed as the frauds they really are. Put Ally and Patsy in there immediately, it's what they want.

I do feel bad for you athletes that are presently there at Oregon. We were there when Dellenger left and Marty came in. It was really hard on everyone and Martin did nothing to help ease that transition.

It's not that complicated folks. The University of Oregon has a compliance office within the athletic department could bring him up to speed in about an hour.
It's like someone else said, Martin was brought in on the strength of his distance coaching credentials and failed to deliver. Then, he blamed on it on: Stanford, Salazar, Phil, and whomever else he chose to deflect his failure toward. If he didn't want to be in the fishbowl, he shouldn't have taken the position and the cash.
They should bring back Gillespie while they are at it.
