It's Ali. And he had good reason to be cocky. He also had the charm to pull it off without seeming like too big of a jerk.

i didnt include baseball players because you said cockiest ATHLETE ever. but most of them are lazy, cocky, douches. especially on the red sox (and to think i used to be a red sox fan...)

i'm surprised you haven't mentioned Steve Scott. He was the cockiest one of them all and the way he boasted about all the women he slept with in his book.
By nature milers and distance runners(not all of course) are renowned for thinking that they are better than everybody else just because they assume they train harder.
Does anyone agree with that. And i suppose since this a distance runners board I'm talking about runners only.

In running I would say Prefontaine and it was in many cases not justified. In all sports, I would say Muhammed Ali. He named the round he would knock out his opponent 17 times and was correct 13. It's not bragging if you can back it up like that.
