Dude, read this thread. Do a search. You don't see any unabashed, unnecessary naysaying regarding Goucher? And you don't think Rupp gets bashed still??? When he ran that 3:56/7:51 double, he was even getting bashed. He was bashed when he considered not racing while sick. He's always accused of drug use. There is a thread implying he is g@y (it censored that word, I think, and wouldn't let me post) at least once per week. Most of the time that Rupp is even mentioned in a thread, there is some juvenile homophobic insult that will soon follow.

You are right, though, that real fans want most American runners to succeed (and for fast times to be run in general). It probably is a very limited number of trolls doing the bashing on this site, but the bashing still does occur.

People keep posting "who are the naysayers?". Are you kidding me? You all are. I just read through 5 pages of bashing and doubters. I am not saying it is necessarily undeserved, but he is proving to have more naysayers than believers.

As far as giving them the middle finger, do your really believe it is a literal middle finger? Are his naysayers going to be lined up at the finish line so he can put his middle finger in their faces? I am pretty sure that this was figurative, and just some hyperbole.

If Adam silences the critics, good for him. If he doesn't, so what. Nothing lost.

And to the bragger who said he makes more annually than almost all professional runners, and then later questioned how much Adam made, I don't have the exact answer. But to quote Running with the Buffaloes: "After winning NCAA's last fall, Fila made Goucher one of the U.S.'s highest paid distance runners by signing him to what was reported to be the most lucrative endorsement contract ever for a distance runner coming out of college."

Well in that case Goucher is creating naysayers with his dumb comments. But he talks in that quote like he is some sought after athlete who everyone has their eye on. But the reality is nobody even pays enough attention to him these days to even contemplate naysaying. He just is not THAT good. I mean he is just drumming up some cliche image of a super star athlete turning all the doubters into believers like he is Michael Jordan or Seb Coe. But he is not on that level. Nobody cares. This quote is the first thing that made me even consider Goucher and his running career in over a year. It was a good publicity stunt at best.

I read about comparisons of Goucher to Meb and Geb because they are ~35 and also targeting 2012. However the issue is that the other two guys have the credentials to be talking about running the Olympic marathon at age 37. Right now Goucher does not.

Not to say he isn't a great runner, because he is. 13:10/8:12 is way better than 99.999% of the population will ever do. (probably even less than that).

I would trade my ability and income to have his ability and make 50k a year instead.

He may be able to do it too, but talk about a mountain to climb. Won't be easy to battle Meb, Hall, Ritz just to get a chance to go, with no experience at the distance. But there's a chance, because it's pretty unlikely everyone will be at the top of their game come trials time.

Even Gotcher has a better shot at the team than Goucher does.

I'd love to see Goucher get back to full health and able to compete with the upper echelon of US distance runners. Though at his age, he is definitely on borrowed time...and with his body type and form I believe the marathon will be very challenging and tough on his body.

There are plenty of aholes trashing him on this thread alone, that's the kind of people he's talking about I'm sure. The thing is, Adam will put it out there and he'll say the same thing to your face. Guys like you on the other hand will talk boldly as anonymous cowards on a message board and would squirm and cower in front of Adam.

There is a strong possibility that the strongest hate for Adam comes from the weakest people, who hold the strongest resentment.

So why voluntarily give them fuel? If you need to bait haters to get up to train and race, how strong are you really? People who are truly secure just do their thing and don't give a rip if anyone else doesn't like or support what they're doing. He comes off like that a-hole neighbor who will let any little thing provoke him into a war with anyone else in the neighborhood. Or that insecure jerkoff who intentionally blocks walkways in bars hoping that someone will bump into him so that he can try to provoke a fight. Yeah, he's got competitive fire, so what? So does everyone else at that level. If you're always burning then there won't be much fuel left come race day.

This guy had his best race in college and his next best success was getting married to Kara. I want to see Alan Webb make a comeback and do well. Adam I can't say the same thing. Oh and he's old and the other US marathon runners are way better then him. I think he'll be at the next olympics, but it'll be to watch his wife...

I have bashed Adam before, but trust me I am much bigger and stronger than little Adam (I was probably too big ever to be a great runner to be honest) and I would deal with him no problem. Runners aren't very intimidating pidgeon shit. That post made me laugh.

His best race was well after College, when he was the fastest American at 5000 meters.

please that was one race which was only 1 second faster than his college time.

Ok, so for a side debate, what was his greatest performance?

Off the top of my head, some contenders:

1999 - 13:11 as a collegiate

2000 - USA XC double (4k and 12k)

2000 - Olympic trials 5000win (everyone says he clawed back from way back and near killed himself or something)

2005 - 13:10 in a comeback after everyone thought he was done

2006 - 6th place in the short race at World XC

2006 - Pre 2mile 8:12, driving a train the last two laps and pulling back Kipchoge (admittedly after letting Lincoln carry him for 6 laps)

This list just goes to show you can't write the guy off completely. The guy's pulled some crazy performances out of seemingly nowhere after long periods off. And it's not like he hasn't done anything since '06 either. He's been disappointing the last two years, but '07 and '08 were still pretty solid years, just not as strong as '05 and '06 (and the competition was getting tougher).

He hasn't looked as bad the last few years as he did in '02 and '03. Before Meb's NYC win this year, there were only two Americans who I would have said could pull of an amazing (trials winning level) performance, seemingly out of nowhere, coming off of a slump or injury. Ritz (remember NCAA XC in '03) and Goucher.

Would I bet money that he'll medal in the marathon at London in 2012...or even qualify? No. I wouldn't. But I wouldn't bet that he wouldn't qualify either.

You only get fast by wanting it for yourself - there is a reason you don't see interviews like that by Lagat or Manzano or Hall - those guys want to be fast for themselves, not to prove anything to the world. Goucher is on some kind of mission to prove to other people that he is still good. That won't get him anywhere - as it turns out, no one really cares anymore if he does poorly.

And what is with the language Goucher uses? Does he really have to curse through the whole thing?

Letsrun has its favourites of who is likes to promote and has for years.

How about some new people guys? Goucher has had a good career but there is no need for him to be on the headlines until he does something impressive again.
