Charles Mingus at Montreux in 1975:
(And I'd agree with the poster above re Mingus' status as a composer.)

I vote for Mick Karn.
Adding Scott LaFaro to the mix:
Arguing over who is the best bass player is kind of like arguing about who is the tallest jockey.
My favourites (whether they are great or otherwise) are:
Paul McCartney
Chris Squires
Geddy Lee
Bootsy Collins
John Entwhistle
Flea

Mick Karn ,RIP unfortunately
hell no rush sucks
Haven't read the entire thread - but I see both Jaco and Mingus mentioned.
Those are my top 2.
Geddy has some cool chops for a rocker though.
If we are talking about flashy rock bass players, then the prog guys like Geddy, Myung and Squire are the best.
If we are talking about pocket rock bass players, Michael Anthony, John Entwistle, Steve Harris come to mind
If we are talking jazz / funk, then Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Paul Chambers leap to mind.
New jazz : Avishai Cohen and Larry Grenadier are awesome.
I have to vote for Mick Karn.
