Head Distance Coaches are killing the sport of Track and Field.

Amen. All they care about is Cross Country and could care less about any other event. They take all the scholarship and give it to crappy runner who run 16 minutes or 19 minutes for 5k as opposed to say a 17' pole vaulter or 42' female triple jumper.

Good thing it is track and field/cc. Give me examples of distance coaches with a clue that are killing the sport. I can give you dozens of sprint coaches who are killing the sport outside the sprints/jumps and completely crippling distance/cc programs. There are always going to be a few schools who won't spread the scholarships to other, non-distance areas but those coaches are few and far between. On the flip side, there are 10 x more sprint focused coaches doing the same.

Div I (Coach Bowerman, Coach McDonnell) Div II (Damon Martin/Vigil - Adams State, Jerry Baltes - GVSU) and several others have some of the most dominate teams in track and cc, with great athletes coming from all event groups - all being run by great distance coaches.

The problem with a sprint oriented coach, most of the time, is that they don't give a fair amount to the distances and the cc teams hurts because of it. Most of those coaches don't realize that cc is its own season and is more of a value to the school to do well in all 3 seasons rather than just indoors/outdoors.

I would love to be proved wrong though.

This is such a ridiculous statement...while I would agree with your general point about favoring distance kids....the degree of exageration with your post just discredits. Please name names of ANY distance coach who has actually turned down a 42 foot triple jumper for a 19 minute 5k girl and I will go slap them myself. Id very surprised if anyone that stupid exists.

Adams? GVSU? If you're talkin' d2 how could you neglect ACU! They have more NCAA titles then both of those schools combined. Historically ACU's head coaches have been mostly sprint/vault coaches yet ACU has longest winning xc conference streak in d2.

ACU is one of the few schools - less then 5, that is fully funded in Div II. If they didn't have the most national championships by far it would be crazy, seeing how they love JUCO and international athletes.

ACU's coaching staff has done a good job though and they are closer to the exception of a sprint/vault coach helping out the cc/distance team fairly.

Portland State is closed and filled. They hired the guy that was there from last year. What do you expect for 20k a year?

UW will hire a sprints/jumps/multis type person....no need to have 3 distance coaches. Greg and Drake will do the job just fine.

WRONG!!! If Pitt's coaches don't get fired, it is a travesty against running. I seriously hope you are wrong, but knowing our really awesome reverse discrimination practices in America, they will probably hold on despite their total and utter lack of competence.

And GA St. posted their position, but we all know what a mess that job is.

Pitt will have a distance and head coaching job open too at the end of this year. Lets just say it has hit the fan there. That is why the throws coach bailed at the beginning of the year, and the jumps/multis coach bailed in December.

Doubtful they "bailed" as though coaching jobs are that easy to find. Pitt coaches are not going anywhere.

You are asssuming they went into coaching jobs. Sometimes a college coaching situation can become so bad that a coach would rather step away from the profession than stay in a toxic work environment. It's a sad sign of the times, but it seems to be happening more and more, and not just at the D-I level.

I find this very hard to believe that less than 5 schools in the country in all of DII are fully funded at the DII level. I call BS.
