Considering you bumped a thread from 2009, I doubt they were using WhatsApp. They were probably playing snake on their Nokia phones and being nostalgic about Polaroid cameras.

Yeah, the "What does fml mean?" and the "People don't need phones!" really out this as an old thread. Nowadays it would be: what's a better app for my 6 year old: Snapchat or WhatsApp?

This is a 9 year old thread. That 14 year old daughter is now 23. So how did everything turnout??

Update: 4k was just the gateway. By her senior year she only communicated through her texts and eyerolls

-graduated with summer school to help posting a solid 2.27 weighted GPA - thank God for electives.

-has two armsleeves, nose ring - could be more tats and piercings they don't know about.

-works as a stripper but says it's not all the way naked so it's no biggey.

-tells her mom and dad she's thinking about community college for the past 5 years. Yet to enroll.

-currently dates a hispanic coke dealer named Rico, maybe a gang member?

Life turned out just fine.

Take her phone after a certain time. Give it back in the morning. Give a basic phone with phone, text and that’s it. No need for a smart phone.

That's just what I was thinking!

The average now seems more like 3800 per month, with whatsapp messages maybe around 1,000 per month. Average time spent looking at cell phones per day for teenagers is supposedly a bit over 2 hours. I'd think it was much closer to the number of hours per day that they are awake, minus any period during school where it is successfully banned.

Also, driving while texting has a significantly greater risk than driving while drunk.

I just counted and I have sent/received 120 iMessages today. All I have had was a brief convo with my sister-in-law about where to ski this winter, a convo with a teammate about our poorly managed club team, touching base with my husband about my commute home from my long run and a brief convo with my dad. It really does not take that much to get to 4,000 messages per month, especially with auto-correct fails and appropriately timed emojis.
