For a college kid to stop hanging around with people who drink, they'd have to move WAAAAY off campus.

Well guess depends on the state and the hospital. Lets say YOU are a doctor. Like any person coming in who is injured you have to look at the liability here. Is it a knife wound, maybe you got attempted homicide. You got a female with a black eye, is this a domestic? You got an 17 or 18 yr old STUDENT from OREGON who is under the influence of alcohol. Whats he gonna do go drive later after you stitch him up. Maybe drink some more, maybe he is depressed, you got a minor crime. You got to turn this over to the next step people to protect yourself and him. Anything happens to that kid and you let him walk out of your hospital the media will be interviewing your ass real soon. I know all the kids get blasted in college. I look at A.J. and Puskedra as some of the greatest young men coming up in this country. People probably said "Man that Pre is a "WILD MAN" when he got stitched up and was probably drinking. Pre was so WILD and funny always drunk up. Then one day it happens. SO now coaches, Oregon Admin., parents and every authority knows we got these young extraordinary kids drinking under age. So lets just let it go. Hope its just booze. If I was a coach or parent....NO WAY! NOTHING IS GONNA HAPPEN TO EITHER OF THESE BOYS. Not on my watch! My laws and restictions would be total. If they had a dream about a drink they better call and apologize. OR they would be gone and back home.

I don't know this for sure. But I imagine that Ryan Hall isn't much of a drinker, and I hear he's pretty good.

Naming one good runner who never drinks doesn't prove that you can't be a good runner while drinking alcohol.

...as someone who got kicked off his collegiate team for a drinking incident i'll throw in my 2 cents.

1) I'll bet it was more that it became public then anything else.....

2) Vin probably heard some of the drinking stories thru the grapevine and felt he needed to send a little message...not a big one, just a little one to get people's attention (maybe AJ's been screwing the pooch while he's been injured)

3) the US drinking age of 21 is ridiculous...who do they think they are kidding....having an 19-20 yr old at college who cannot drink with one who can is a recipe for disatser (egs immature drinkers who got to get in as much as they can when they can)

4) and I'll bet money the coaches conversations involve some what were they thinking attitude along with what a bunch of idiots......and a whole lot of chuckling behind the scenes about how a bunch of guys are shaking in their boots and feeling one inch tall now that they've been busted

I see where you're coming from on the drinking age. I'm not necessarily against lowering the drinking age, but I'm afraid putting alcohol in the hands of 18 year-olds(assuming that's what it would be lowered to) would lead to lots of HS seniors being able to supply underclassmen with alcohol a lot easier. I can't really see what good could come out of that.

You have contributed nothing to this topic. Please stop making dumb comments and offering insight to a topic that you have no 'experience' with. Face it, people partake in a wide variety of things in college. So someone from a well known school got hurt, suddenly it becomes huge news??? I guarantee everyone who has gone through 4 +/- years of school can recall an incident similar to this. Get over yourself, this kind of stuff happens.

Man, if the police had gotten involved every time I did something while drunk in college, it would have been a very bad deal for me. As it turns out, every weekend hundreds of thousands of college kids get drunk, fall down, throw up, make out with ugly people, and then wake up in the morning mostly no worse off for the experience.

I'll work on getting over myself, but to tell you the truth getting drunk is one of the most self-centered things someone can do. If you have the "I just want to feel good" attitude and could care less about anyone else, that's not someone I want to be around. Yeah, of course this kind of stuff happens all the time, does that make it right and should schools condone this if an incident is found out about? The way people try to justify some of this stuff is laughable.

A place like Oregon, where its most famous runner killed himself in a drunken driving accident, has a special obligation to respond to alcohol related incidences. First of all, underage drinking is a crime, on par with shop-lifting. Providing alcohol to a minor is a crime. Both athletes should be suspended and if they have any further incidents should be expelled from school.

HAHA, it is the only place where it borders on the realm of socially acceptable. It's what makes it beautiful and ugly at the same time. Glad you didn't get in any real trouble and only found yourself in a few awkward mornings!!

Of course it is self-centered. When I drink, do I think I am doing some kind of public service? Of course not. I doubt other drinkers think it is anything but self serving.Doesn't mean it isn't a lot of fun at times. I can name a number of other things that are self serving that people do that aren't a problem.

You were born, reached age 12, then went straight to age 45, obviously.

I guess what I meant to add is that not only do drunks become self-centered but they do things to others that they think are funny. They don't consider that other people may not like someone messing with them. It's pretty rude, and when you cross the line of just drinking for your enjoyment to disturbing others, that's a problem.

Who's to say that everyone who drinks is a drunk? I drink but I by no means would consider myself a drunk. I believe I had a successful collegiate career based on my high school performances. I had a great time with a lot of good friends and really would not change any of it. Do people go over the top sometimes, sure they do... That doesn't change the fact that people can drink, have fun (this is seperate from drinking) and compete on a high level all at once. There is more to life than running and I feel bad for these guys getting crucified on here for something many of us have had to go through in a much smaller, more personal setting.

Just an FYI...it is immedietly obvious from reading this thread who is in/has been to college and who hasn't. For those of you posting who have no conception of what college is like, I'm sorry to say this, but everyone can tell. It's kind of embarassing for you.
