Bekele's turn of pace is so devastating that Bekele versus Bolt over 100m WITHOUT STARTING BLOCKS would be very close. Why? Because Bolt would lose his explosive advantage from the starting blocks. In any case, starting blocks are an artificial addition to the track and should not be allowed to aid starts in any distance. When will the IAAF get their act together on this one?

I say Bolt. It's just a 600m. As a world-class athlete people need to credit his with some versatility.
Nate Anderson, a 200/400m HS stud about four years back ran an open 800m early in the season against another 400m stud and the two ran like 154. Just because their specialty is much shorter distance doesn't mean they can't move up one and be great [but not elite]. This is an example of how an elite can move up just one event and still be extremely good - because they're an elite athlete, they just naturally have some versatility.
Bolt can run a studly 400m. Bekele cannot. An extra 200m may make it a bit more even, but Bolt is still a stud. It would not be that close.
Like most 100/200 guys, Bolt doesn't just get worse with distance, he gets EXPONENTIALLY worse with distance. The three seconds he would have on Bekele at the 400 are assuming both go all-out for 400, and I think we can easily guess who would have a faster all-out 200 following that 400... Bekele by a lot. Bolt could take it out in 50 and Kenny could outkick him, and Bolt would still not be fresh enough over that last 200 to take the race.
bolt didn't even run the 100 until the year he broke the record. prior to that he was mainly a 200 guy who sometimes dabbled in the 400.
He did run the 100m but as a junior. He had a gap of 1-2 years from the 100m which is why its doesn't show in the senior records

That's right! There are some things people just can't do. Prior to 1954, even a blow-up doll knew no man could run a sub-4:00 mile. This is not the way the human body works. Next somebody's gonna tell us they can actually break 3:50. Impossible.
Bekele ran inside 22 sec in a 200 at a dual meet in high school.

Craig Mottram has said that he's run 49 in the 400. I'd say Bekele's speed is right around Mottram's. I don't think Bekele could run faster than 48.5. Just my opinion.

Bolt used to run the 400m. I think he ran something around 46(?). Bekele can probably run 48ish. But this is a 600. Bolt has been training for 100/200 now. So if the two raced today I'd have to pick Bekele to win.

You guys throwing the "elite athlete" card, saying that because Bolt is a superb sprinter that he could move up easily, are way off the mark. The reason he is SO good at sprinting is because his body is made PURELY for sprinting, meaning that even if he wanted to move up to the 800, he would suck. I'm not going to get into whether or not he can get the 400 meter record (because that is not what this thread is debating), but I know for SURE that even a slight distance jump up to 600 would not work out well for him at all. I mean hell, Bekele is an elite athlete at close or the same level as Bolt, and he could probably only run the 400 as fast as a good high school kid.
All in all, while Bekele gets raped by Bolt's pure speed, it doesn't make a difference when the end of the race requires your aerobic system to be tuned up fairly well.

bolt does some 600s in training, and he has time-trialed that distance (it is the longest distance he runs...)
so not that it makes him comfortable with a 600, but not totally foreign to it either
