Any > 50 year olds under 3:00 for the marathon?

John Bednarski (sp). I think.

He was very good College runner (raced Pre) now living in Alberquerque. Still very good marathon runner for his age. Not sure how good but might be worth looking up.

Thanks Bob. Not so good lately but getting back into it again. Last xc season I mostly just raced (often sat and sun) and maybe one run mid week and some mtn biking.

I was running 16/33mins off heavy training in my 20s but after a 2.44 at 20, I only managed to pb at 2.43 for the marathon (age 24). Tended to overcook the long runs -the sunday group often had Rob De Castella, Chris Wardlaw, Jeff Coole (2.13), Graeme Kennedy (2.15), Ken Hall (3.55/13.30) etc. Actually one of the slower guys was a guy called Nic Bideau..lol..

Since turning 40 I've tended to just do 40-70kms per week and run well enough off this if I'm consistent with it. Broke my foot racing on a stressie abot 5 years ago and have been pretty slack in recent years. Noticed my weight is about 3kgs above the old racing weight now so I'm back into doing some actual training although it's too much fun to call it that.

Is there any news about Derek Clayton in Oz?

I know that he had one or both hips replaced and

hasn't run for a long time. Just wondering if he

ever comments on the state of Australian running,

within a few months, my PRs were:

5K - 17:55

10K - 37:30

half - 1:21:26

Averaged 60-70 miles per week for six months leading up to marathon. 8 to 12 miles at marathon pace inside an 18-20 mile run are the staple. Up to six, mile repeats with 90 seconds recovery are also helpful.

The mile repeats are at 10K pace.

I am about 18 months from 50 and I don't think a 3 hr 'thon is in the cards for me (PR of 2:45 @ age 24). I was never a high mileage guy, and don't think I can get in the MPW to attain that goal.

I know every individual is different, but would you consider a sub 5 mile at age 50 just as difficult or easier than the sub 3 hr?

Although I am nursing a strained hammy, and been hardly running the last few weeks, I would say I was in about 20 min 5k shape at the time with no speed work.

The sub 5 min mile is my goal.

Haven't heard anything about Derek in recent times. He used to do a lot of cycling going back some years.

He doesn't seem to be in the public eye these days.

The sub-5 mile is harder imo. I'll be 50 in less than 2 weeks. Last Dec I ran a pr mile of 5:09. This Oct I ran a 3:03 marathon with the last 5 miles in a stiff headwind. My strenghth is greater in the mile than the marathon and I see 4 minutes much easier to take off 26 miles than 10 seconds off my mile. I'd like to knock them both down though but it's very hard to train for both. By going to the marathon I noticed that my leg speed has suffered because of it but I'm back with the track short stuff with the indoor mile all comers races coming up in a couple of weeks. I hope I can at least beat my 5:09. I'll have 3 shots at it. And I'm flirting with the Masters Championships in March. That would give me a little more time to get my leg speed back. We'll see. It gets harder as we get older. Good luck on the sub-5!

Bunches of them here in MA. and a few sub 2:40s

Mark Reeder is turning 50 shortly and he just posted a 2:38

Craig Fram is 50 and he can drop a sub 2:40 at will.

Chris Spinney is near 50 and he ran 2:39 in Boston this past spring as did Norm Larson at 50plus.

And there are a couple others who can run under 2:40 at age 50plus in the Boston area.

I agree with you that the 5 minute mile is harder

for a 50+ year old than a 3 hour marathon. At least

Not even close. A 5-min mile would be in high 2:40's marathon range on eqivalent performance scales.

That's the trouble with measuring everything by charts and tables. Sub five minute miles were a struggle for me even when I was able to run 2:40-2:50 marathons. On the other hand, I knew guys who could run miles under 4:30 who would turn in much slower times at the marathon. I think it really depends on what sort of runner you are.

Yeah, I'm more like you. My times line up pretty close from 10k and up, but shorter than that there is a major disconnect. Generally speaking, though, a 5-min mile is a much better time than a 3-hour marathon. Now at 62 I think I have a shot at sub-3 (will find out on Sunday), but no way possible could I break 5:20 for the mile.

Agreed that sub-5 mile is much tougher. I can go sub-3 for marathon but no way can I go sub-5 for mile.

Also agreed that sub-3 marathon for a 50-year-old isn't stunning, but in my view is a solid achievement and worthwhile goal for a working man. What would the equivalent time be for a 30-year-old in terms of difficulty? Would you say - 2:40? Faster? Slower?
