Agreed Tedhead.
One small thing. Gladstone hired Tedford. Sandy has retained him, which is not small feat, however.
The comparison to Stanford is and always has been a good competitive standard. Thus our rivalry. However, there is a gross discrepancy in the budgets of these two athletic departments. In the non-revenue 'olympic sports' this is pretty relevent. Still... give 'em the axe... the axe... the axe...

Very true.
Stanford is the financial model for all D-1 intercollegiate athletic programs. Their $375 million dollar endowment is the gold standard for all other athletic programs in the country.
Am heading up to Sacramento for the State Meet and NCAA's.
Should be a lot of fun!
I'll never forget Jesse Williams' high jump progression last year at the NCAA's at Hornet Stadium. Only about 500 people in the stands, but an amazing performance by a guy that might barely be 6-feet tall!
That, and Dan Lincoln and Allistair Cragg leadinig Arkansas to a team title in 2003 under the lights. Good times in SacTown!
I think the "math" was the fact that they were sleeping together. That is actually also a well known fact to EVERYONE on the team, one which apparently you are not as well aware since you are all the way up in Canada.

Really now?
And who are you on the Cal track team?
Care to stand up for once in your life instead of hiding behind an anonymous internet name?
Why do these guys always make the "who are you?" claims. I want to know once and for all who Track Dude/Wags is. This dude always backs Cal, and he says that it's not hard to know who he is. YET I know for a fact that NO ONE on the current track team knows who this fool is, or if they may have seen this individual around, then they would NOT know that he was the infamous TRACK DUDE/WAGS. He said in this post that it is not hard to find out who he is, but his shroud of anonymity continues to this day.
PS> I know for a fact that there was an inappropriate relationship going on between Joyce and Huffins, and I'm certain that that relationship caused much tensions between the team members and the coaches.
2 words.
Hire Richie Boulet.
I SECOND THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks, "math professor", for helping our math challenged friend (practice those times tables!). i am not on the cal track team, however it was common knowledge around berkeley what was going on between them. look at the quotes from the throwers in the article. don't you think they might feel she was hired because she was "doing the math" with coach huffins? hence the bitterness from the throwers. i also believe he was married when they were "solving functions."
Hire anyone that has no ties to Cal, fire whole staff. That program is the true definition of underachievement!
On another note, I think that it is a shame that Klech wound up choosing UCLA, as both he and Kevin Craddock have suffered numerous injuries under the training of Tony Veney. In fact, I hear that Craddock's mother is so upset with Coach Veney that I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin goes back to being coached by Remy. Klech's parents are besides themselves too. I often wonder what would have happened if David had choosen to come to Cal instead, and work with Coach Miller. There is "training" and then there is "need-based" training. I get the feeling that the latter would be most applicable to Craddock and Klech, but unfortunately it appears as though they may have not received that kind of training at UCLA. Again, it would have been very interesting to have seen Klech develop under Coach Miller.
Yeah, neither of those two were injured in their senior years of high school and entered UCLA with pre-exisiting injuries....oh wait, yes they were; but hey, if the discussion is about Cal's track coaches, let's just start firing shots wildly at everyone else at hope to bring someone down with us.
Craddock was the only freshman in the NCAA final last year, and has the second fastest time in the country this year; Klech is a freshman and went to UCLA with an injury that is still healing. If anything, the UCLA staf has been very conservative with these two as you have not seen them pushed into racing through their lingering injuries.
Steve Rainbolt at Wichita State should be considered for the job. He has done wonders at Kent State for 6 years and for the past 7 at WSU...anyone?

You have no idea what you are talking about.
Try telling that to Mrs. Craddock heading into the NCAA Regionals up in Eugene.
What are Mrs. Craddock's coaching credentials again? It is understandable for a mother to be concerned for her son; however, I only know of three meets that Kevin ran all year...I'd say that was a pretty conservative approach, and he appeared to be peaking well with a big run at Pac-10s. Can't imagine what else coach Veny could have done to protect him any more.
I think a lot of programs that would have an athlete of Kevin's caliber would have him running both relays and the intermediates at just about every meet all season. Objectively, it appears that Kevin has been handled quite gently there over the past two years, only running the highs and sparingly at that, but maybe someone closer to the program can shed some more light on it.
If you have ever seen Joyce and Huffins interact at a meet, you would have to blind or you are still a virgin to not see that they were totally doing it! I don't give a crap what her bio says - if by coaching you mean naked stretching, then yes, he was coaching her

Of course, coaches like Rainbolt at Wichita and Bucky at Northern Iowa would be great choices, but that's not the wya it seems to work in track. In basketball and football the coaches that win at "lower levels" end up getting hired ta the "BCS" type programs. Winning is important in basketball and fotball. In track and xc it's all about filling the slots (do we have enough minorities? do we have enough females?). How does a guy like Huffins get the job in the first place??? No head coaching experience and doesn't even have his undergrad degree! Incredible!

Perhaps.
But if you were up in Eugene for the Regionals you would have heard something coming out of the UCLA "camp" that would indicate otherwise.

You KNOW for a FACT, eh?
Wow, who's better than you, buddy?
Do you really think that anyone would give a rat's arse about what you feel is appropriate/inappropriate behavior between two consenting single adults; let alone coming from an anonymous internet poster on Letsrun?
In fact, if every poster here that posts with so much holier than thou ego were to actually show up at the Nationals, we might see the stands filled halfway to capacity for a change.
Get real.

Wow, I really have gotten under your skin haven't I?
If you didn't spend so much of your time acting like you were in the "loop" at Cal, as opposed to acting like the clown that you have always shown yourself to be on these message boards, then you might actually say something factual, and with some intelligence for a change.
I was at every Cal home meet this season; not in the stands, but out on the track/field. I was also at the Big Meet and the Pac-10's in Palo Alto, as well as the NCAA Regionals up in Eugene last weekend. The team stayed at the Valley River Inn, but I was staying elsewhere with a friend whose son was vaulting for UCLA. I even stuck around to watch some of the elite's run on Saturday night trying to make a qualifying standard with Coach John Hayes of Northern Arizona and a few others.
I'll be at the NCAA's all next week up in Sacramento.
Perhaps you'd like to "introduce" yourself to me.
I would welcome the opportunity to meet you.
You seem like such a classy guy.
:)
Huffins to UNLV?
