that sh*t was funny. haha.
I have no sympathy for Rupps parents. When you pay for 1 your kids to travel overseas and to New Mexico for a high altitude training camp plus a coach, and for another kid to attend a very expensive private college, you deserve what your financial irresponsibility gets you.
Yeah, well, the Kenyans have it worse than the Rupps. The Iraqies have it worse than the Kenyans. The dead Jews have it worse than the living Iraqies, blah, blah, blah, what the hell does one have to do with the other?
"We'll do whatever we can to support (Galen) and his brother. We can swing it, as long as we cut corners along the way."
1) What exactly does he mean by cutting corners?
2) Why does Mr. Rupp refer to Colin as "his brother" (Galen's) instead of saying "Galen and Colin" or "our sons?"
As a parent I'm outrage that this issue made headlines(lack of appropiate news maybe). You help your kids in every which way possible for them to get ahead. You teach them discipline, respect, honesty, hard work, etc.without expecting any kind of payback. If I go into debt or not, necessarily or not to help my kid it would be because I love him and want the best for himor her.The debt would be my responsability. We don't know for sure what kind of effect this situation is going to have on Galen and the rest of the team, hopefully it won't be that bad.Responsible news is what we need.Shame on you Beto>repulsive.

They're not asking for your sympathy. Rupp is simply facing a choice -- like a few lucky athletes in several sports face every year -- take the money and go pro, thus improving his family's situation, or stay in school and put off a payday in order get the college experience. It's an interesting dilemma, and one I was glad to have the chance to read about.
But they are asking for sympathy. The "woe is us, our son is becoming a star but we can't afford it" story was told to the reporter. They gave a bunch of quotes for the article.
The interesting thing is that there aren't many American distance runners over the past 15 years who are really wealthy. Injuries have caught up with most of them a few years after college, and last I checked, we're not blowing 'em away at the Olympics.
If he hadn't grown up in Oregon, would Phil Knight give him the time of day? I think not.
In honor of Artie Lange...."WAH, MY FAMILY'S IN DEBT."
Yeah a-hole, like many other families who help their kids go to college without full-ride athletic scholarships. If it's that bad jerkoff, turn pro!
It's May. After this track season and next year's XC season, only 6 more months will pass. No reason to stay on the U of O team. Go pro and continue with Salazar and stay in school.
This article is spin setting up this decision.
And quit parsing this article so closely. All articles are inacurate. If the Rupp's say they are improvished, then assume they are. Unless some here can link to their bank account, you have no idea.
Did they put Colin and Galen in day care? Did mon only start working again a few years ago, meaning the family lived on one income? Either way, I cann imagine their savings are that big. Catholic schools cost money. Seeing specialists about his thyroid cost money (remember he has a bunch of considerations you don't like trying to lower a world class 10k time and not running afoul the NCAA and WADA.)
And, don't compare Rupp to the typical college student wasting time in Europe (and Oz). Rupp is their gaining valuable work experience.
Don't suggest he get a job, he has one - running 120 miles a week.
Good 4 u. . .

Pay -up - I was on my own financially since age 17 and paid for all of undergrad and grad school. The undergrad was via a Div. 1 scholarship - no deal there because working a job on the side was impossible. Grad school paid for by trading futures for two years, doing well, and saving every penny. And guess what? This didn't make a better person, only a more hassled and stressed out one. So of course I am now overindulging with my daughters - no talk of athletic scholarships, no talk of going to the cheaper school (unless they want it that way), and lots of encouragement, both financial and otherwise, to develop human capital and maturity through education. I say this not in any sense that I am somehow a "good guy" for doing this - no - the sense I am trying to convey is that I would not have known just how right the course of action in supporting my kids in their endeavors is if I had not had the opportunity to come into contact with people like you (and your parents and grandparents). Corny? Maybe. But learning from those around me that do the right thing has really helped me. Running fast, or getting A's or making lots of money may be great, but it pales in comparison to giving an opportunity to the next generation to make them "better" (in the holistic sense) than you are. And folks with your views that I have come across have got me to understand the notion that conflating pain with achievement is a fallacy. Of course, some out there will have parents like mine - and if that is the case - unfortunate it is - but hope springs eternal - and a goal to break that cycle is a laudable one. And to that end, I am impressed by Mr. Rupp's comments that he is doing all he can.
I'm impressed with the Mr. Rupp, he seems like a guy I'd like to get to know. As usual, I'm not impressed with Salazar. He claims that the Rupps are impoverished (I'd be pissed by that representation), he himself will make a lot of money off Galen when he goes pro, BUT HE CHARGES FOR GAS ON THE RIDE HOME FROM PORTLAND? If thats true, what an asshole ....
none of my business

"As usual," you've failed to read or comprehend the thread. Salazar has to charge the Rupps for any "benefit" he provides, whether it's coaching, transportation, or whatever, otherwise Rupp would lose his collegiate eligibility.
man, maybe this is just me, but both his parent's have jobs in the medical field. How bad is the financial burden? They were kind of vague in the article about just how much money they have to pay up.
The whole Rupp and Salazar thing just keeps getting sicker. Those two make me sick!!! For the love of God enough already! Do they honestly have to make his financial home life front page? The news in that town must be really lacking, as the people who demand no more than that drivel for front page news.
if there's such a problem, why don't they dump salazar til rupp gets out of college? Last I checked, Lananna was a halfway decent coach who has done just a few things with his distance guys.
The front page says it all. 'rents are pulling six figures, college education paid for, you want poverty go to Kenya or even Mexico. He's not even poor by american standards - upper middle class for sure. "you deserve what your financial irresponsibility gets you"No one is forcing Rupp to comepete in the NCs. Its not like there is NFL type rule. Go pro if there is so much $$$ out there for you. You can then pay for you education if you want it.

They're mostly in the hole because Salazar convinced them to have to go pro out of h.s. rather than compete for any college, if it would mean letting go of his control over Rupp for a few years and handing that over to Martin Smith, and then they had to pay back all of the benefits Rupp received before he enrolled at UO so that he could be eligible and not run afoul of the NCAA. They made a decision (Rupp was a minor at the time) and now they have to live with the consequences, whether it would be Rupp not being eligible for college competition or whether it's paying back all the Nike largess that they happily accepted for their son before they changed their minds about college competition. They, along with Salazar and Nike, dug themselves that hole.
Is this anyone's business? Leave it alone. This individual, as well as his family, is none of your business. "Letsrun" is a disgrace for allowing this type of BS on their "message board." What care is it to you? Wejo, are you seaking plubicity for your site by using this? Email back...
Its on the board because Salazar made the remark in a recent article!
Talk to Salzar and the Oregonian. You > off your high horse.
