I came across the '82 race on Youtube by accident, I was looking for some fun video footage to put into a lecture. I had the dubious distinction of finishing last in that race, albeit with a respectable 4:24. I ran 4:18 at Dartmouth and almost got away from Stahr, but he caught me off the last turn. I was not in the same league as a lot of those guys in the mile. Earl Jones, Olympic 800 Meter Bronze medalist 2 years later was 9th.
Mike, any chance you can send me the file or make me a copy of the '82 race?
Great to see the link on Mike Collins, I was 3rd in '81 to his win in class B states, he had the fastest time of the day after Grant Whitney and Steve Loretz(from Corcoran) were DQ'ed in the A race in the snow in Malone.
The 1983 class from NYS was the greatest class in the history of the state. Collins, Anthony Smith, Charles Marsala, Miles, Stahr and Jeff Van Wie (a 1:49 guy in HS that never won a NYS title, Golden West was same day as NYS his senior year, he won GWI in the 1:49)
Mike was just a brilliant runner to watch. His acceleration was just explosive. His relay carry at Millrose his frosh year at ASU was just amazing. I always consider it an honor to have been in some of the same races as those guys.
