why wouldnt you just run a HALF MARATHON. And if hes taking medals and awards form more deserving runers ,why doesnt he just come in at 5 frigging hours, its not like hes gonna be by himself

Oh my goodness. Lets analyze this, should we? He's an old person (55-60) that used to fully complete marathons in 4 hours. Obviously, hes done a lot of them and enjoys them.
Now he is at an age where is body is breaking down, and can't really train for them, and it's hard for him to compete a whole one. BUT he still loves the atmosphere, and the socializing, but not so much the running. So he thinks he'll enter and just run part of it.
What other motivation is there?
I agree he is in essence "Cheating" and shouldn't finish, but seriously. Hes NOT winning money. And as far as placing ahead of people, who cares if you're 1478th, or 1479th?
Do you guys hear yourselves? You're talking about tracking this guy down, finding him before New York in his hotel, and finding his address/phone number to send him messages. This is really not a big deal.
And if this is the most outrageous thing in your life right now, you should be out ENJOYING this time instead of spending it on letsrun.
He has taken top 3 or even "won" some races, that's why it is a joke. Oh and by the way, "in essence cheating", cutting the course is blatant cheating.

I agree, this is most certainly blatant cheating.
I can see this being a big deal to people. Some people work thier asses off to get to the speeds that this guy is cheating to get to. Obviously this is a very big deal to some people.
He might not be taking money away from people, but he is stealing their prizes. As those people if this is a big deal.
Should it be any different if he were winning races? No. Cheating is cheating. "Oh, I only stole $1000, it's not like I took $1000000 or anything. Not a big deal."
I personnally know this person. He is not a bad guy. I told him about this thread and it upset him very much. He is not "cheating". He explained to me that he likes to travel and run in the big races but just does not want to do the whole distance. So, he reviews the courses and selects an alternate route that allows him to see most of the course and sights. He is doing this as a way of healthy sight seeing. It also allows him to meet all different kinds of runners both fast and slow. As far as taking prizes away, he never EVER even considered that cash or other prizes are being given out for the kinds of times he is running and has NEVER claimed any prizes.
As much as he enjoys the part about going through the finish line he will no longer be going through the shoot.
Thanks a lot for spoiling a good guys fun. Way to go LetsRun crowd.

That's totally made up.
johnny-Yes there are races that attempt to verify ages for age group award winners. And yes, some races definitely look at splits for anomalies. The marathon I work for does both. We require a USATF registration before we send out any checks, and we're able to verify ages through USATF. We don't have chip mats every 5k, but we have enough, and at the right places (along with some strategically placed video cameras), to be able to verify that finishers have completed the course. From what I've seen over the past few years I can't believe there's any major marathon anymore that does not have course cutters. This year we removed 4 people from our results for cutting. The topper was one runner who has been in the 4:30-5:50 range the past couple of years who somehow managed to split 1:51-1:25=3:16, and this on a day that got up to 80 degrees.
Honestly, I don't know what some people are thinking!
That is the worst BS excuse for Cheating that I have ever heard. Come on, don't try to defend Bill. IT IS CHEATING REGARDLESS IF HE CLAIMS A PRIZE OR NOT. He cuts the course and posts a bogus time - THAT IS CHEATING MY FRIEND.This makes zero sense. I want to see the city's "sights" so I travel all the way across the country to do a marathon to take an alternate route to see the "sights". Duh don't you understand that most marathons take runners through the sights of the city to show the city off? Why doesn't he tour the city and NOT do the marathon? The guy is a marked man and a Cheater and has no one but to blame but himself.

Great troll! Kudos!
Seriously, this guy appears to get MUCH better with age. I say 2:5x in NY.
Although there are a lot of sights to see there...
The whole world knows you are a course cutter. Every major endurance blog is calling you out. I recommend you stop analyzing your splits and go to Wal-Mart immediately and buy the largest rifle they stock and shoot yourself with it. Keep the reciept next to your suicide letter so your family can return it. Your suicide letter needs to describe how much of a worthless piece of shit your are.

Thanks for starting my day with a good laugh. You guys are the best.
Flog the bastard and anyone that defends him. He could've avoided this witch hunt if he skipped the chute. The finish line chute is reserved for FINISHERS - no ifs, ands, or buts. The guys an oxygen thief and should be black-listed from every race from Chicago to the local YMCA 5k.

The guy is a cheat, but geez man, settle down. I am not sure it should go that far.

If he really wants to travel, "sightsee" and meet runners, then run the course + sightsee BEFORE or AFTER a major race! Not during the RACE! And you sure as hell don't register as a runner, go through finish lines, take medals, certificates, $, plastic trophies, or even the free T-Shirt! It's disrespectful to the sport, the organizers and the runners who register to run the race. If you get a bib number, you run the course. Plain and simple.
You should understand that by doing this course cutting, you insult every runner out there. Not only that.. but it's hard to believe that all of his "sightseeing" during races somehow always manage to make courses shorter (smell of BS in your "excuse" for your "friend"). If he doesn't want to run a full marathon... then run a 1/2. There's a million races out there of varying distances. Pick a distance and run the whole thing!

If this is not troll bait, it is the biggest piece of whiney horse shit I've read in a long time.
If this is not troll bait, please answer 3 questions for me:1) If all he is doing is "healthy sight seeing", why isn't he cutting the course and finishing with the 4 or 5 hour finishers? 2)Why did he accept a competitive bib, keeping it from a deserving runner? Isn't that in fact taking a prize from another runner?
What kind of a base does this guy have?
Wow...you look remarkably fresh yet I still smell a rat.
