Newton's not gone. He was suspended for the end of the xc season this year but he'll back next year, and likely with a chip on his shoulder.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the '77 Deerfield, IL team. In Illinois, there is debate if they are the best IL highschool team ever. Anyone have stats? I know they were led by the McAllister twins.
rob - i know you have been posting on this thread about your high school team at mead - im just curious, what did matt davis do to injure himself after the '93 state meet? i thought you may have answered this question before, but i can't find it...just curious b/c i thought i remember you saying he was out on a run and stepped in a pothole or something - thanks!
Hammmond had those three guys but still only got, like, thirdi n their state meet. Their 4th & 5th guys stank it up!
This is not Rob, but I know the story. If you are familiar with Mead training you know what the brent wood park relays are. They were doing those and it was snowy/icy. Matt fell and tore a tendon in or near his knee.

wow...that's a bad deal - who knows what could have been had he not fallen
Anyone have any stats on the team from Jesuit, Sacramento, CA from 1985-86?
I *think* they set a DMR national record in the spring and almost broke the 4x1mile record the next day. They ran an all time best team time on the MtSAC course in the fall during cross country. The Mastalair (sp?) twins, Eric and Mark, both placed very well at Footlocker (then Kinney). Their third man was under 9:10 that spring and the twins were both well under 9:00 and 4:10. But it didn't stop their, they had three other very good runners.
Anyone else remember this team?
in track probably berkely in 1981.
Agreed. Everyone knows about Obea Moore and the Muir team he was on. Henry Thomas, Mike Marsh and the Hawthore team they were on, the amazing Long Beach Poly men and women, but before them, in 1981, Berkeley set FIVE OUTDOOR NATIONAL RECORDS in one season and the Men and Women won the California State titles in the same year. They set numerous state records as well. In a dual meet they had 8 guys under 49 in the open quarter.
But only idiots like me will think this is interesting. This board is only about distance running. Thus people want to talk about how great Kennedy's surge was in '96, not the obvious stuff like Michael Johnson's 19.32.

Actually we were doing a 2-1-30 fartlek at Manito Park about 3 or 4 days after state. If you know the park it's very hilly and a lot of side hill running and some pretty uneven ground. He ran the workout with me as usual, so it wasn't like he was killing himself. Matt's knee just started hurting towards the end of the workout, and the next day he was limping. He was able to do 2 or 3 more easy runs before footlocker regionals several weeks later.

Sorry my info was wrong, that is the way Tyson told it to us about a decade later.

Haha. That doesn't surprise me. With the 1000's of runners he's coached it's easy to mix stories. Matt's had countless injuries from just as many activities so that makes it even easier to forget.
But it was great to remember the Brentwood park loop. That workout hurt. I remember doing a workout a week before the State meet there my sophomore year in wet snow. One of the seniors dipped his mullet (the year was 1991) in an icy puddle and a week later finished 5th in State as our 3rd man. He was usually our 5th man and probably should have been about 20th in the race. A few days after state he was walking death with the flu.

Actually they were very good in 1993. Our first meet of the season they beat us (mead), although our number one guy (Matt Davis) was out sick and our number 4 guy (Greg James) ran with a bum leg and ran near a minute off pace. It was the only loss for our varsity team in my 3 years. They also rocked in the J.V. race.
At foot locker later that year at foot locker we went 1-5 on their number one guy. It may have been a question of peak timing.
Did Matt Davis really split 4:19 and 9:06 at state when he ran 14:09?
I spent an entire 60 minute run pondering such an effort.
st joes ny used to have a very strong top 3/4. they must have done pretty well.
