The women's took a lot longer. Partially due to a lack of time on my end, but also the fact that two of the regional meets ran a 5k, and one a 6k so they were tougher to compare. This, like my men's rankings earlier, is a snapshot of where things stand as a result of this past weekend's results. Head-to-heads from earlier in the year were not taken into heavy consideration as this is meant to reflect where teams stand at this exact point in the season.
1. Taylor (2)
- Jaynie Halterman appears to have a good shot to win the individual title. The freshman has been nothing short of dominant all year, having not lost a collegiate race yet. Her supporting cast is star-studded by prior XC-All Americans Noel VanderWall, Ahna Neideck, and Aubrey Brinkruff. To be frank, I don't know how they haven't been atop the rankings since their performance at Gans Creek.
2. Saint Mary (3)
- The St. Mary women had not had a breakout performance this year, until they controlled the field at Blazing Tiger bumping themselves up to #2. Speaking of the number 2, the Hiebert twins are good... very good. Pairing that 1-2 punch with Kate Madsen seemingly finding her groove, this squad is very strong up front. Their 4 and 5 also look to have a good shot at All-American, which makes this team dangerous.
3. Milligan (1)
- Similarly to their men, the Milligan women took a bit of a tumble for me this week. Ellen-Mary Kearney and Alyssa Bearzi are strong up front, with Hannah Brown hot on their heels. The drop off from their top 3 to their fourth and fifth is slightly larger than St. Mary's which is why I have them slotted just behind the Spires.
4. The Master's (4)
- Hannah Fredricks is my pick to give Jaynie Halterman a run for the individual title. Behind her, Emma Nelson looks to be a strong #2 who has been consistent all year. Outside of those two, the top five has been variable for the Mustangs which is why I have trouble moving them any higher at the moment. Ellen Plamgren is the wildcard here. If she is on, this team could crack the top three.
5. Montreat (8)
- Out of the top five teams Montreat is certainly the most surprising, especially considering the circumstances they are working under. If it wasn't for Taylor's freshman phenom, Heather Murphy would be my pick for freshman of the year. Finishing 20 seconds back from Milligan on team time certainly shows this squad means business. Garcia, Ray, and Wiebe will all be looking to claim All-American honors. The question mark comes at the five spot. If they can get that figured out, this team will be trouble.
