Downfall of Robby Andrews continues

I haven't watched the Driven episode, but based on people's descriptions, it sounds like he might be trying to replicate whatever worked for him in high school (living w/ parents, low mileage,not watching what he eats, etc.) He might think that consciously acting like a pro-athlete is detrimental to his racing. I think Andrew Wheating might be going through a similar struggle himself, although he's racing slightly better than Robbie. I have known some talented milers who, once they started to pay attention mileage, splits, diet, etc. found themselves taking a step backwards rather than forwards. It's weird how that works sometimes, and it tends to be purely mental.

Romaniw is straight thug. I don't blame Andrews for losing to him. I once saw Romaniw drink 20 beers in a night and break 1:50 the next day. Andrews is a cool dude though. He's got a cool way about him and I hope he learns to market himself a bit better like Nick S. has done. Oh yeah and gets his act together and runs fast again, which I'm pretty sure he will.

Have you ever thought the opposite? Robby always struck me as a kid that just went out and competed. Probably didn't spend any time thinking about running at all.

Now he's a pro, has nothing else to do but think about running. I bet being with Webb didn't help last year as Webb probably was thinking about everything - remember the whole 'steps' comment.

So Robby probably now is thinking about everything instead of just racing.

I bet he sleeps better, eats better, everything. Runs worse.

Could Robby be the new Alan Webb? Maybe he picked up some of Webbs roller coaster season moves?

Where's the positive outlook? Robby had so much success so fast. It's ok to have a few bad races. It doesn't mean one thing or another. This website is full of people who don't know anything picking on really talented people when they have a subpar race. Sub par races are going to happen. It's part of being a track and field athlete.

The story's not over yet. Stop pretending you know where Robby's at. Robby is one hell of an athlete.

Exactly two of those things are actually important.

Athletes and spectators at track races are usually pretty friendly. Where do all you mean folk hide out? I seemed to have missed you most the races I was at!

You need to come to Austin and watch a Leo workout. He's focused on some bigger goals and not trying to impress the letsrun posters. Leo is the ultimate professional in every respect. Reading some of these posts is a big joke.

Uh its SR not JR and I've been around the sport and on this earth long enough to realize that sometimes things aren't what they appear to be. I also don't hide behind screen names and take pot shots at people, so please step out of hiding and announce yourself so we all know who you are. But since you are probably a Hall of Fame Coach or middle distance runner with better credentials than 1:44/3:34, we should all listen closely to your words of wisdom.

I'll tell u what's wrong with andrews, kid thinks he is a party animal. Kid blacks out every weekend. I have a video of him ripping shots and a pic of my roommate tea bagging him.

I find it totally bizarre that Robby weighed in on his own thread and no one even noticed. Too busy talking about Manzano or partying. Weigh in on the 5K question already.

I would bet over 90% of the people of this board hopes Robby turns things around and understands most athletes hit a bad patch at some point in their career. Some people don't understand that and unfortunately, what you get on this board is often the vocal minority.

An advantage of going through a bad period is when things turn around, you really appreciate it and don't take success for granted. I have also been around the sport for a while and when an athlete is way off their game it could be too much of something, not enough of something, a hidden injury or illness. When you figure it out and make the adjustment things quickly improve. It's usually not the athlete or coaches fault, because they are training hard and trying to figure things out. That's the part some people don't understand and since they don't have a personal connection to Robby and can post anonymously you get the mean post. With that said, people have a right to talk and speculate. When things are going well for an athlete, people will talk about how well they are doing and when thing are going poorly, people will talk about that as well...that's just the nature of things.

If you really are Robbie, please don’t take these threads seriously. You are a great talent and just going through a low period. Like anything in life this will pass. Many of these posters take unnecessary pot shots and should immediately be removed from the forum. In regards to the actual question of moving up to the 5K, I think it’s way too soon to make that move. It doesn’t mean that you don’t run 5K temp runs during training (14:30 – 15:30 min. range) on a regular basis to maintain overall aerobic fitness. Someone with your talent should stay at the 800m / 1500m distance for the next 2 – 4 years and work through these down periods. Perhaps you can expand your training with some of the local elite 5K guys while continuing to do the anaerobic based workouts. You need to have all the energy systems in balance. Eventually everything will come together. Please don’t get down on yourself and definitely ignore these negative posters.

Great post! Not Fast, you clearly get it. Competitive running is not easy, no matter what your ability level is. Virtually every runner I have ever met has had ups and downs, some explainable and some not. Like Not Fast, I also believe Robbie should stick with the 800/1500 for several more years. I think he has only scratched the surface on his strength training, and when all the work he has been doing over the last few years builds up, I think somewhere down the road, and probably sooner than later, we will see a monster 1500 out of Robbie.
