No shock there. I bet plenty of ordinary things fly right over your head.
FYI--You and your jingoistic buddies will be glad to know that the photo chosen for the splash page on Leo's website shows him carrying one flag only--an American flag. Hope this helps you sleep a little better tonight.
Ruben Navarrette Jr., CNN Contributor who wrote that piece is a "POCHO". Homegrown! Homegrown! Caca! Caca!
I agree. You seem to be one of only a few here who make well thought out comments that express the bigger picture. I might add, he was sent to the olympics by the U.S. and was wearing the U.S.A. jersey. Actions seem inappropriate.
There's a picture of the author with the article.
He's fat.
So I don't care.
No shock is correct.
The only thing you can do is react like a child when challenged or see an opinion opposite of yours.
You should stop now, if you get any more worked up your acne will flare.
Give me an f-ing break, I understand that these boards are full of right wing nut jobs but come on! Since when does the country who offered the most to a person get to claim that persons entire identity? Since when does having dual citizenship mean you have to denounce completely the influence that one or the other country had on your life whether that be cultural, familial or educational or whatever. Its not like he ran a victory lap with burning american flag and a mexican flag, he carried an american flag because he is clearly proud to be american, he also carried a mexican flag because he is proud to be mexican. For a mexican american who claims in his article that these issues are complicated and deep seeded, the author seems to dumb them down to nothing. I agree with other posters when they say that none of this would have been possible without the sacrifices of his parents, so essentially he should be more thankful to mexico than to america. Also, this is just incredibly racist and finally WHO CARES, he won a silver medal, dont try to detract form it.
It is great to be both proud of your country and your country of origin. Great for Leo.
America was built by Native Americans, Spanish, English, French, Africans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Mexicans, Asians ... we are truely the only melting pot on the Earth.
Is Germany a melting pot? Is Japan a melting pot? Is China a melting pot? Is India a melting pot? Is Indonisia a melting pot? Is Mexico a melting pot?
If you come to represent this country and take all of its advantages, you better bear its flag and no other.
You can be very proud of your heritage as all of us immigrants in the USA are. But if you chose to run for the USA rather than Mexico, you better not pick up a Mexican flag when you represent the USA in the Olympics. I would rather have another USA runner take his place and not medal, than see a guy pick up another country's flag.
the author is a JACK....Leo is proud where he came from. That's all. At least he is not a drug cheat like Lagat
He must be a son of colombian immigrant drug dealer
Is he proud of where he really came from ..... where dreams become reality? Or is he proud that he can go back to Mexico as a rich and sassy very small little guy who held the Mexican flag as a representative of the USA.
The next time Lagat wins a race.....should he run around with the American flag and the Kenyan flag? Manzano was representing America and that it the only flag he should be waving. If he wanted to run for Mexico, he should have done it.
If Lagat takes a spot from a USA runner and puts a Kenyan flag on his shoulder as a representive of the USA team, then he should be disqualified from representing any USA team in the future.

Lagat/Kenya ≠ Manzano/Mexico. Two different situations. This has already been explained several times on this board so far this week. Sanya Richards/Jamaica is different as well. Do your homework next time.

I really didn't like the author's point of view. He tried to put band-aids on it by saying stuff like "yeah but I'm really proud of being a mexican." Who cares? He obviously sees the Olympics through a different lens than I do. When this guy said that the Olympics is about representing your country, individual be damned, I cringed a little bit.
Sure, it's about representing the good ol' U.S Of A, but for EVERY athlete the Olympics are the pinnacle of their career. They're not doing this for their country, their doing this to validate everything they've done, all the sacrifice and hard work, put in during the past four years. In my eyes the country comes 2nd. It's about celebrating the athletes within that country.
I think he's mistaking it with the overarching theme of the Olympics which is unity among the constituents of our tiny planet. To me it's about the individual, the country can follow.
I really don't have a problem with it as long as he hangs the Mexican flag underneath the American flag!!
how bout when this cnn author wins a silver medal he can tell Leo what flags he can run around with
If Lagat puts a kenyan flag on his shoulder after running for the USA, it is the same as if Manzano puts a mexican flag on his shoulder after running for the the USA. There is no difference.
I believe that we should ban for life any USA Olympic athlete who carries a flag that is not from the country that he represents at the Olympics as this is not what the Olympics are about. If you want to represent another country, then do so. Why did Manzano not run for his country in the Olympics?
