Everyone who attends BYU knows what they're getting into beforehand. If you want to rock long hair, don't go to Liberty. If you want to choose your outfit every day, don't go to West Point. If you want to bang chicks, don't go to BYU. Pretty simple. No, I don't agree with their code of conduct. But there are plenty of students who are willing to abide by it, and if you're not one of those students it's not the place for you.
Having graduated from BYU, no one can tell me I didn't make every choice I wanted to make. I signed the honor code, not someone else. It wasn't like I showed up on campus and thought, "oh crap, I didn't know I couldn't do that..." I signed my name b/c I wanted to - simple as that.
No one forced me to either do something or not do something. Everything I did or didn't do was my choice.
I enjoy the lifestyle that I signed up to live. Posts like this make it sound like people who choose to live the way they do are forced to. Nothing is further than the truth.
A basic tenant of Mormonism is that everyone is free to choose to do whatever they want. I don't control you and you don't control me. We all make our own decisions.
I do believe in accountability for my actions - whether in a religious context or civil law.
If I want to leave the church or become an atheist, that's my decision. Who's going to stop me? If I want to continue to believe what I believe, that's also my decision.
Other schools have dismissed athletes for the choices they made this year - which is no different than what BYU did. BYU's code may be more strict - but everyone still has a choice... I was recruited by many other schools, but chose BYU.

Any culture that expects a certain code of conduct from its children, and is sheltered enough or concentrated enough to prevent much outside influence on them, will raise children who feel they have no choice other than what is laid out, such as accepting mormonism or attending BYU. Expectations of family and community can be astronomical burdens to shed in any society if a person wishes a different path, and Mormons are perfect examples.
Perhaps this kid made a mistake, or perhaps he just didn't believe in everything he was told he should and made a choice outside of those expectations. Either way, it is the school's policy, restrictive though it is, and my advice to this kid would be to find a faith and school that actually fits his beliefs, and to stop attending one that apparently causes him enough pain that he feels it necessary to break its rules.

Totally agree with your post and if you are not willing to abide by the laws then BYU is not the place for you. Students sign the honor code knowing what they are getting into. On the other hand nothing wrong with criticizing BYU for silly strict laws that punishes people for having something so humanly natural and healthy as sex.

That is a valid point, there is plenty of family or cultural pressure or influence in the LDS culture, but it doesn't change the fact that there is always a choice. I know plenty of people who left their faith. It's always a choice...
For me, it's as simple as living a certain way - liking the result I get out of what I follow - and continuing on. If in the end I was wrong to follow LDS teachings, I still will have had a happy life.
I am not saying that people who lead completely different lives aren't happy too, I just know what I'm doing is good for me.
Having said that - I do believe what I live. If I didn't, I would feel a negative pressure from those around me - but I honestly don't.
If someone felt "forced" or "pressured" to live a certain way, that would not be fun.
This post is about Mr. Davies and I can't speak for him or anyone else, just me.

Dude, we are NOT bashing their speed. Some of the BYU runners are some of the best in the country. They train hard, study hard and race hard. (They probably go to bed hard and wake up with sticky sheets too hahahahahahaha)

It seems perfectly reasonable to say that people should just stay away from BYU if they don't like the rules and lifestyle. However things become a little bit more complicated when other incentives are involved.
For example, if the student in question didn't get into any other comparable academic schools (I know with BYU that's a long shot, but for the sake of argument) or if he was offered an athletic scholarship that made college affordable when it would have otherwise been out of reach -- in those cases the student would be forced to choose between his education and rules that most of civil society would find more than a little bit unreasonable.
It is more than a little bit like the army telling young men of few means that their only way to an education is if they sign up to commit yet-unknown atrocities. Sure they're able to quit at any time and forfeit the education, but doesnt that seem like a compromising situation to be in from the start?
I think that we can all agree that nobody should be denied an education because of their completely natural human urges and that education itself is about teaching, not issuing mandates that fly in the face of human nature.

"Only don't have sex...or wear bright colors...or eat ethnic food."

"Yep. Those are the rules we made up. Sex is bad for you."

Also, this has nothing to do with who is fast and who isn't.
It doesn't even have anything to do with running per se.
This is a debate about education policy and the ability of a private educational institution to penalize or expel its students for seemingly innocuous infractions.

You can't tell someone they are free to do whatever they want and then tell them you think they are going to hell for it, that its a sin, and that it is a bad thing. That's like telling a student in a class they can write a paper about any topic and then giving them an F because they wrote about a topic you don't like. While they have a "choice" they know they will be punished or looked down on for making a certain one. Ohh, and why don't mormons think I'm free to chose to get married to another guy?

Exactly. Unless a video recording of the act was submitted to the school bishop, I don't know how they could prove this. I'd challenge the school to provide proof.
