I am sorrz to say that, but the US are not exactly the best reference. There is no ratification of the international criminal court. So when you do not even let your own people be taken to justice on an international level, what gives you the right to others what is ruight and wrong.

(ps: i know I will get smashed for this, but some people here talk like the USA are the number 1 instance for justice, while I do not have to bring up issues like guantanamo bay, support for a certain mr. pinochet and the likes...)

Oh and on a whole different note:

I currently live in the neigbouring country and happen to have a co-worker, whose family owns a business there. My boss was kind enough to give him as much time off as he needs to support his family in Alexandria. Hence, I am getting frist-hand experience from in country, and that is the current status as he tells me:

The uproar is without a leader, nobody knows who is in control and there are small interest group pursuing theior own goals. He sees no perspective for the time AFTER Mubarak and fears that all these small political groups will wind up fighting each other to the detriment of egypt and the whole region.

He and his family have to fight off looters (as I said, they own a business) several times a day and nobody seems to care.

The worst part is though, nobody in the outside world wants to intervene, as that would mean having to make as decision as to who they support. They (obivously) don't want find themselves betting on the wrong horse)

People are suffering and dying out there and I'd be glad if the international community intervened.

And then, I honestly could not care less whether it is the US, Europe or any Arab country as long as the people there get to decide themselves, what kind of country they want to live in.

That just as an addition to my (sort of harsh) comment to those people who think they are on a high horse because of superior ethics or what-not.

Israel is the biggest power, but they certainly are not the biggest threat. That honor would go to Iran, a country whose leader has repeatedly threatened to destroy Israel.

Israel would only use it's nuclear weapons if they faced an existential threat. If Iran was allowed to have nuclear weapons, they would use them immediately. This is why Israel and the US will not allow this to happen.

Oh, so now Mr USAISBAD thinks the US should 'intervene'?! Cuz there is no other country or group of countries that could even begin to comtemplate 'intervening' in the Egyptian mess. And that includes the worthless UN. The US is NOT about to intervene in this party - they are on their own.

Yes, this revolt (revolution?) is pretty much leaderless and I think it's generally encouraging.

It's not Iran, people, for the simple fact that Egypt isn't Shia. There's no counterpoint in Sunni Islam for the hierarchical clerical structure in Iranian Shia Islam that can fill the power vacuum. And the Muslim Brotherhood? Please, you know they long, long ago divested themselves of the radical fringe. Seriously, do you think an autocratic government like Mubarak's would have allowed even a snifter of that group to survive if they hadn't?

Still, there are most definitely dangerous islamist elements in Egypt, but the real risk is military dictatorship arising out of this.

Fact is this: There are simply too many egyptians for any successive democratic government to satisfy in the near term (and, by near term I mean the next 20 years or so!)

Islam will not be a threat here. With 50 of Egypt's 80 million people under the age of 30 and unemployment hovering around 20% (conservatively) , the young are simply tired of this shit. They are tired of being unemployed and tired of Mubarak's cushy rule for the past 30 years. They will establish their own democracy. It's only a matter of time before their president is ousted. Praise be to Allah for that.

The Sunni/Shia split is localized to Iraq and Iran where historically the races (Semite Sunni and Shia Caucasians) have clashed. But outside of Iran & Iraq, Hezbollah has many Semitic (Israeli and Palestinian) freedom fighters in addition to Sunni Caucasians. Similarly with Hamas who has many Caucasian freedom fighters from Northern Lebanese Christian and Shia comminuties serving in Gaza, West Bank, and occupied Palestine. The situation is akin to the US Civil War where families have freedom fighters in various combat units.

Israel, a nation with hundreds of nukes and the missiles to deliver them and a history of attacking, occupying and murdering their neighbors -- to say nothing of their inteference in the US political system -- is not a threat.
