Last week my single, 61-year-old brother-in-law had a stroke. He was married briefly in his twenties, but vowed never to tie the knot again after that relationship tanked. He is not Gay, has always dated off and on.

rehab since the girlfriend he mentioned would be coming to live with him and take care of him...There is no such girlfriend.

This scenario does scare me but not enough to want to get married or be with someone only if this happens.
You mentioned "There are no extended family members who feel obligated to provide this man with the daily care he needs". I promise you, I don't want to get married or have kids just so someone will feel obligated to help me. Since I am 48, in excellent shape I would most likely have a girlfriend much younger than me. The last thing I would want (or the girlfriend would want) is to change out my crap bag and bathe me daily (reminds of Elaine on Sienfield whose older beau had a stroke).
Several years ago I was depressed at all the things you mentioned above. What will happen if I get old and need help? I don't want to die alone. I was on a long run thinking about it and this thought came to me: I would commit suicide before I was incapacitated. As crazy as that sounds I immediately started feeling better as now I at least had a solution. I will have enough money to fly to Switzerland and die with dignity. Having a sibling or child next to you when you die is wayyyyy overrated. My grandmother last words to anyone in my family, seconds before dying was to me: "I love you Michael"...my name is not Michael.

Suicide is pretty much automatic eternal damnation in Hell. Of course if you're not a Christian, that's where you will be suffering forever anyway. You're much better off even in the worst types of pain and torture in this life than in Hell.
As far as your grandmother, was she a Christian? Michael might have been a family member who came to pick her up, or even the Archangel Michael.
Oooooooooooh. Hell sounds like a very scary place to go. I hope you don't get in trouble and have to go there for taunting the heathens when you thought you were going to spend eternity in a happy fairyland.

Suicide is not a Sin. Mankind lies. I think they told slaves that (suicide is sin) to prevent suicide so they would not lose Profit! Know the Bible, Discern the Lies of Man.
Jesus committed Suicide by sacrificing his life, knowing full well that He would be killed. No different than pulling a BB gun on a Cop to get Help with the Final Step. Now ... it is not a good thing but nobody is going to hell over it. If someone has been grieved to the point of that, then , their suffering was already more than they could bear. God is not some Sadist. And, wanting to commit suicide so as not to be a burden? God could only Smile upon such a Good Soul.
Now ... There is plenty of help for when you get OLD. Senior Services can make sure you`re helped when in need. Government provides nursing home care and other in home options. I am partial to the suicide too; because this earth just Absolutely FAILS my expectations! Sorry God, but you have your FEELINGS and I HAVE MINE TOO! I DO NOT LIE.
Of all those I know the married guys are far happier than the single guys.
I was single once, marriage is far better. Having someone caring about where you are going when will you be back, I like that.
