I agree with this 100%. Running was in the dark ages in the 1990's and Goucher was definitely the primary American up and comer during that time that started to carry it out of the gloom. His attitude is not that different from Mottram (or Pre for that matter) but he was just being Adam. A tough dude who really didn't like losing and didn't think he had to take it. And even if you don't like Mottram or Pre or Goucher or those types, you can't argue that they have an impact on the sport where the otherwise the white distance runner can easily be forgotten. Guy has been thru some crap and keeps coming back. Can go thru years of injury and subpar performances to bounce back with a huge performance.

What he does physically going forward may not be impressive, but his attitude has had more of an impact on the runners that matter nowadays than most people realize or will give him credit for. Good for him and best of luck to him.

As a fan I'd rather watch a top runner with some emotion and passion who's willing to make the bold statements. The modest distance runner is recognized and remembered like a dust particle. They are everywhere but hardly noticed by anyone. What good does that do for our sport?

Actually it's funny, I read that article after my initial post and was expecting a lot more abbrasiveness and arrogance based on the posts here. To me (and maybe because I've followed Goucher for while) there was a lot of honesty and modesty in there.

How that guy can be in Portland and surrounded by all the success and momentum (including his wife) and be stuck with injuries and a bad surgery for the last several years is beyond me. Why anyone feels the need to wish ill on him is beyond me.

I just love how everyone is freakin out about his quote. "Oh my god he's going to give me the finger! AHHH!" "Jesus H Christ he said the f*ckin F word!" Oh NOO!! And then there are even better ones doubting his age, "He'd better get a walker cause his back is going to give out in the next 2 years." "He better tell the nurse to keep the rubber down in the shower or he might slip and break a hip!" Anyways, I got all jacked up when I read it and put my ol' Goucher poster back up on the wall (An old school one of him when he ran for FILA) and I'll be cheering for him when he runs his marathon. Oh yeah, I hope he puts on a giant foam middle finger and waves it at the camera, that would make me smile. GO ADAM!

If you think Dan Lincoln has been off the scene for the past few years because he thinks pro running is "idiotic," then you obviously don't know him.

You're half right, though. There are lots of people making good money in "regular" jobs who wouldn't trade places with, say, a pro runner earning $50K who has a 50-50 shot of making the Olympic team. But here's the thing: with very, very few exceptions, the people who value money and stability over the opportunity to compete with the best in the world are precisely the kind of people who would never reach that level anyway. Even if they had the physical gifts, they don't have the necessary mental gifts.

You honestly have to be fairly well educated to know who these cats are. A true fan of the sport, sure. Billy Mills by the way was quite a story, he wasn't just someone who ran well. Bill Rogers was well known during his era largly because of his road racing and the fact that fun runs were off the hook during his time with the general american public. These days there are so many distractions from mainstream media and so many other interests for people to get sidetracked with being a darn good runner doesn't get you much publicity. Immigrants and refugees are darlings of the media because they have a story behind them but Goucher is just a white kid from the US of A. Naming a few old schoolers certainly doesn't disprove my point about running popularity in society today. For the few runners from over 20 years ago that you mentioned, how many tens or hundreds are we not remembering since then?

Ask your non-runner coworkers and neighbors in Hoboken who Adam Goucher is, see if anyone knows. This interview and his comments haven't brought in all the MMA fans that you imply it should.

I'm not sure if the whole chip on the shoulder attitude is necessary. But you gotta love the fact that the guy is going for it. Can't hate on that.

Viva: I'm with you --- didn't like the middle finger stuff, but respect that this guy has the edge at age 35 to be willing to put it on the line and take another step back into the arena. He's in this to win versus in this to be corporate (Nike) which would have resulted in a more inocuous response to the journalist question.

Funny how Seb Coe wasn't critized for going after the naysayers following his victory in the 84 Olympics.

I find it humorous when a Nike athlete attempts to be a rebel. Nike is now 100% corporate america. I am not passing judgement, that is the goal of most companies. Nike is a billion dollar successful company. There are no rebels that wear a swoosh. Adam sounds funny saying things while wearing a swoosh. It sounds like someone on Jerry Springer giving stock tips. It just doesn't work.
