I heard from a friend that a big shot at MIT in robotics was not considered anybody/respected when he visited Japan. So I wonder how they view our college/quality of education.

Yes I have taught in a Japanese high school for six years and a university for 7 and I am very aware of what is expected of the students. I also have experienced the American system and understand it well. My argument is that Japanese universities are much less academically rigorous. The purpose of universities is not to educate but to develop the social skills of the students, so they can successfully get along with their co-workers in Japanese companies. The education happens in Japan when they enter the companies. I could find you sources for all of my info but if you really want to know you could just look it up.

Excuse English, I am better at German. I find Iranian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, European, Indian, etc. universities to be vastly superior to the U.S. schools as they don't have to waste years teaching high school courses for the first four years as they to do in the U.S. and misrepresent it as bachelors degree. U.S. universities recruit from my country and the listed countries for faculty and researchers for the reason of the U.S. cannot provide enough qualified personnel. Check the UCLA, Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, USC, CMU, Cal, etc. science and medicine websites for proof. The Japan secondary school system is unmatched anywhere in the world. 100% literacy was achieved over 100 years ago, no nation has yet to achieve even 85% (Switzerland). However, do not be mistaken to believe we are all so entranced for the U.S. The primary objective of universities in Iran, Japan, etc. is NOT to excel in USNWR surveys, is NOT to provide faculty to U.S. universities, is NOT to provide researchers for NASA, DOE, UC, DOD labortories employments. The primary mission is to provide educated citizens for own country.

Well thought out response, genius. I hate to burst your image of wonderful Japan but find one person who teaches here that diagrees with me. It must be painful for your idealized image of Japan to be attacked. Did you attack your parents when you found that there was no Santa Claus?

Yes. I love Japan. The very best comfortable country I have lived in. We can be safe 24/7 any city, campus, streets, station, hotel, shopping store. My wife, daughters stroll and enjoy at night w/o crime to them. To compare the U.S. country is a jungle of apes and wild rabid dogs.

I have. I went thru the local Japanese Buddhist Temple here in town and made dozens of contacts. There was no interest into committing for 4-5 years. Falling behind their contemporarires was a big concern since U.S. academics are so far behind. Very high interest in summer track and field camps, pole vault camp, running camps, running/tourism at Mammoth, Flag, Boulder, UCLA.

I have worked with Japanese for many years and have made a lots of trips to Japan. I have Japanese friends who graduated from the imperial universities and some with kids who are now attending IUs and U.S. schools as well. With out a doubt, most of the imperial universities are excellent schools and are some of the best in the world, but, they are not the best. There are many lists and world rankings for universities and not all of them are U.S. lists and the majority of the respected lists place about 2/3rds of U.S. schools in the top-50. If you are not from the U.S. you probably want believe this, but publications like Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report, etc., go out of their way not to appear biased. Btw, it is not as difficult as you think to objectively evaluate a university, there are certain things they all have in common.

It is a big accomplishment to get accepted to one of the imperial universities, but once you are in, academics are not the priority. Home life for a lot of Japanese kids is so regimented that once they go away to school, it is party time...which is not unlike a lot of U.S. schools as well. To the guy who criticized U.S. secondary education; unless you live in the Amazon Jungle or Central Africa, I bet you can't make through a day w/o using, touching or somehow interacting with a U.S. invention. (Give it a try.) Yes, the U.S. hires foreign professors, science and technology workers to feel a workforce gap, but at top end, like space exploration, stem cell biomedical research, nuclear physics, etc., it almost exclusively U.S. brain power.

That's 100% incorrect. There is no other outside schools that matter to Japan. Only those who can't get into school then have to study English and try outside in the cruel environs of the U.S./Europe. Japanese schools cooperate together in academic research with many instututions and corporations across the globe. Japan has some of the leading techonology in the world and has surpassed the U.S. and Europe on many fronts including this year, Fujitsu produced the fastest supercomputer chip in the world. Japan's domestic and miltary nuclear, military satellite, and military sciences surpasses the world in many areas and is not shared with any country including the U.S.

That's the type of thinking that encouraged Pearl Harbour - it was wrong then and it's wrong now.
