I like the idea of the Exeter Marathon (only qualifiers and 5minutes quicker times) but the course will not make for a successful race. Out in the country side for a boring tour of RI and not even through the nearby URI campus to have more spectators. 8am Saturday morning race again will not get people to come out and make an event out of it. In the end the race will be nothing more than a fast training run for sub-elite runners.
Have it Saturday night, go through campus, encourage students to drink and line the course and then you'll have a race.

If you define "success" as a ten-thousand man/woman field, then you're probably right. I know the race director and he does not define success by the size of the field.
But he says there are people from all over the country already registered and one person from abroad!
