also school such as University of Wisconsin has a relatively high acceptance rate and is OUTSTANDING in many areas. I knew someone who went to Brown University and then took courses at Wisconsin over the summer and he said the teaching and facilities were much better at Wisconsin. Brown was a POS he said.
University of Oregon is still awesome school academically with solid areas. But because the acceptance rate at Oregon is 86%, there are a lot of morons yet to prove themselves. e.g. Prefontaine was an immature moron but a tough mofo.
Schools like CalTech (D3) are elite and kids stay up all night and have 800 Math SATs but blow at sports. Lots of 35 minute 5-mile joggers. Don't go there.
As one of the first posters mentioned, the best academic Division-I school for undergrads that isn't Duke, Stanford, or an Ivy League institution is Davidson College. All of Davidson peer institutions (highly selective, small liberal arts schools) are Division-III: Williams, Haverford, etc. Their men's and women's cross country programs are decently competitive, recently finishing 12th and 17th in the Southeast Regional, respectively.
